I’ll wait for Ree’s post on this. Thanks.

Is he going to stand or sit for the national anthem?
Posted on 2/20/20 at 2:49 pm to doya2
If he sits will that make him NOT a great LSU athlete, worthy of recognition?
Put differently, to be recognized for his contributions to LSU basketball, do his politics have to be acceptable to you?

It's a valid question. If someone disrespects the flag I'm not sure he should be recognized.
Put differently, is how a former athlete conducts his life irrelevant to determining whether he should receive a university honor?

What name is going to be on the jersey they retire? Jackson? or Abdul-Rauf? Just curious. Anybody know what the jersey hanging at UCLA says? Alcindor? or Abdul-Jabbar?
ETA: Just saw the conversation in the other thread. I'm not advocating either way- I'm just curious.

Boys momma named him Jackson, I’m gonna call him Jackson

Not irrelevant but in this case it shouldn't matter. Whether most of us agree or not, the first amendment guarantees his right to not stand.
He does it on religious grounds and there is such thing as freedom of religion. If we choose not to honor his achievements here(2nd best player we've ever had based on college) because of his religious beliefs does that not open a can of worms we don't want?
Example, say our leaders are Baptist does that entitle them to not honor a Catholic because they don't believe in the same fundamentals religiously? How about Jews? It would set a horrible precedent. As far as I know Abdul-Rauf isn't a terrorist or criminal so why should his belief system matter?
If you go the political route, would a Republican leader be ok not honoring a known Democrat or vice versa?

People fought and died so we’d have these rights. I’ll be there and don’t care either way.

This above.
Mahmoud Abdul Rauf never played at LSU, Chris Jackson did.

yeah, but none of y'all are his Momma, so, you don't have the right to call him Chris Jackson. You call him by the name he goes by which he has used for some time now. Listen, just because you don't like someone's religion is no reason to disrespect them like that. But I think they retire the jersey name that he used while at LSU when he played which was C Jackson.

Wait, what? His not standing for the national anthem of our country was a religious issue?
If so, then yeah, I don't like his religion.
Show some respect for the flag of the country you live in and that has allowed you to make MILLIONS playing a game.
Regardless, his basketball play at LSU deserves recognition.

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, a swift and streaky Denver Nuggets guard, was in his sixth and steadiest season in 1996 when fans and news media members realized that, during the pregame national anthem, he would either stay in the locker room or stretch on the sideline.
Asked to explain, Abdul-Rauf called the American flag a “symbol of oppression, of tyranny.”
“I’m a Muslim first and a Muslim last,” said Abdul-Rauf, who entered the league as Chris Jackson but changed his name after converting to Islam in 1991. “My duty is to my creator, not to nationalistic ideology.”

Chris Jackson
He’ll always be Chris Jackson.

What is it specifically about “how he conducts his life” you find objectionable?
Until recently, one could hold their own religious beliefs without adverse consequences in this country.
Anti- Muslim bigotry has become fashionable nowadays in some corners.
Should we retire jerseys only for good Christian, Republican, white basketball players?
There will not be many....
