He had a spectacular two years and played a very significant role in LSU finishing with two top 10 finishes, an undefeated regular season, and an SEC title. I am not sure waste of talent as far as LSU is concerned is the right word to describe him.

Yeah, I was at LSU in '79 and I don't remember this at all. Then again there are a lot of things I don't remember about 1979.
