I just got into an argument with my UT co-worker about LSU's non-conference streak in which he basically said we never play anyone. Well I pulled this out for him and decided I would post here so that we could once again realize how bad arse this is.

Power 5 opponents

@Arizona St. – 2005
Arizona – 2006
Virginia Tech – 2007
@Washington - 2009
(Atlanta)UNC – 2010
West Virginia - 2010
(Dallas)Oregon – 2011
@West Virginia – 2011
Washington – 2012
(Dallas) TCU - 2013
(Houston)Wisconsin – 2014
@Syracuse – 2015

Losses - 0

4-0 home, 4-0 away, 4-0 neutral

If you want to make him feel even dumber, you can remind him that Oregon and West Virginia both won their respective conferences in 2011.

VT won the ACC in 2007 as well.

So that list includes three Power-5 conference champions.

Who's his team? Does he want to compare non-conference schedules?

I've never understood why bowl games aren't counted. Yes, the regular season streak is impressive, but we have lost numerous games to non-conference opponents during that streak, they just happen to all be bowl games. Bowl game stats are now lumped in with regular season stats, so why are the wins and losses excluded?

They keep track of coach's bowl records separately from regular season as well no?

No argument about the bowls but it's still and impressive streak given the competition. We have not lost an out of conference game in the regular season in Les Miles' tenure. That's pretty crazy given that list.

Also, I don't feel that we get the respect we deserve. A lot of pundits harp on the SEC teams having soft schedules. We agreed to play all of the teams above and two-thirds away from Tiger Stadium.

What about Oregon state 2004? Streak goes back to 2002 doesn't it?

Yep. 2002 VT was the last loss.

It's always a stupid argument. LSU played one "Power 5" team a year on average over that time frame. Pretty par for the course. Maybe they play an above average number of 1-AA teams, I don't know and I don't care. App St beat Michigan the year before LSU played them, right?

Five. Not sure I would call that "numerous", but that's how many it is. Five. In 14 years.

2002: Texas
2004: Iowa
2009: Penn State
2012: Clemson
2014: Notre Dame

Strange that three of those five got the winning score on the final play of the game, while one more got theirs in the final minute or so.

And of course if you are counting bowl game losses, you have to count bowl game wins against:

2003: Oklahoma
2005: Miami
2006: Notre Dame
2007: Ohio State
2008: Georgia Tech
2010: Texas A&M
2013: Iowa

Excluding bowl games if kind of makes this a feel good stat. However, we all play the same number of regular season games. In a time frame, we all (typically, thinks like McNeese happens) play the same number of games during the season, however, not all teams play in a bowl game.

I'm glad they exclude bowl games. It's hard to get up for a participation trophy game.
