I went to the 1969 LSU-Tulane game with my dad. I recall just before the game that LSU found out that they were snubbed by the Cotton Bowl thanks to Notre Dame. They voted to make the Tulane game their bowl game and beat the Wave 27-0 or something similar. The 69 run defense was something. They gave up about 34 yards per game. Texas was great with the then fairly new wishbone attack and I had been looking forward to see who would come out on top. LSU had a great chance to beat them if they played.

I have always thought that it was that game that started the throwing of oranges for teams headed to the Orange Bowl

yes, i was a junior and was throwing oranges. seems immature (and it was) but the ticket taker damn sure couldn't have missed our bag of oranges when we went in. the orange bowl determined that we were getting the invite IF we won that game. i'll never forget archie manning running for his life all game long. of course, it wasn't long before i witnessed him doing it with the saints. those were great days; not perfect, but great. in many respects, being a fan at that time was better than being one now.
