It was a Les Miles level of terrible clock management. If York doesn't make that kick, LSU loses...in regulation.
Florida had just gone 72 yards on the drive before to tie the game. If York misses, LSU gives Florida the ball at their own 40. All Florida would have needed to do is gain about 25 yards for a reasonable FG attempt. Given that LSU's defense allowed Florida to gain 42 yards...on 3 plays...in 15 seconds...to attempt a 51 yard FG that just missed as is, I think it's a safe bet Florida would have gotten closer than a 51 FG to win the game if York doesn't hit arguably the greatest kick in school history.

I will never forget the game, the shoe, the kick but I had forgotten that Fla was favored by 23.5 at home that game and we had a true freshman QB going against a Heisman candidate. I mean, it really was one of the nuttiest games ever.
Having a down year here and there is expected but seeing programs like Florida, Tennessee, Florida State, Miami, Texas, USC get stuck in the ditch of mediocrity for so long gives me PTSD from our ~10 years between Arnsbarger and Saban. It will be nuts if Bama goes 8-4 or 7-5 the next five years…

Shoe game was probably the only time I’ve had an actual laughing fit during a LSU game as opposed to a “ha ha you suck” type laugh. Me and my friend could not stop laughing at the “throwing the LSU player’s shoe 20 yards down the field” and replayed that part so many times. It was up there with “personal foul, he was givin him the business” NFL ref.
Granted we were drunk as frick. But man that was great.
