Players have to want to come here. Right now they are going to Texas, Georgetown, etc. Also, basketball is a one and done sport, that is different than both football and baseball. Other than a good season here or there, I don't see lsu being a contender year in and out.

LSU will win with Tim Floyd! I think he is the best coach we could get that wouldn't view this job as a stepping stone. I really think he would stay here and win here with his Louisiana roots.

I support Trent. I think he's going to need more support to get it done. Tim Floyd's not coming here and I, for one, do not want his arse.

There is NO reason, absolutely NONE, that LSU cannot have a competetive baskekball program to go with its other successful programs. IMO it is the biggest failure of the athletic administration, which has so few. But there is no reason we shouldn't be competing for at least the West on a regular basis.

You just made Joey Bell take a drink.

And of course LSU is a basketball school. 3 of the 50 greatest NBA players went to LSU.---and should have been 4.

On the matter of Trent Johnson as a coach, I don't have an opinion because when you are losing to Nichols St and mid-level SEC teams, ESPN isn't exactly showing a lot of broadcasts.

How long is Trent's contract?

And whoever made the comment about N. Texas was dead on. If LSU apologized and could convince him to come back, LSU would become a force.

probably because when they get decent players they can't keep them

It seems like if we lose players early to the draft or academics or something happens (injuries, thuggery, etc.), there is nobody on the bench to take up the slack. Seems like there is no quick fix to this one.

You sound like you and I were at LSU at the same time. Roundball games at the Assembly Center were nearly as much fun to attend as football games. You had to get there early to get a seat, particularly for SEC/"big" games. Nobody even knew LSU had a baseball team until the mid-80's. Unfortunately, winning basketball programs have a hell of a lot more prestige than winning baseball programs.

+ 1000
I remember going to the LSU Baseball games adn there were maybe 250 people in the stands. Later on, we would watch games from the top of the married students appartments so we could drink beer.
I remember going to the UoH game and watching the Phi Slamma Jamma beat our asses. benny anders (?) from north La was sticking his arse out at us in the student section before the game while we were holding up our copies of the paper.
The good old days for certain.
For all of those on here that don't rememeber any of this, let me remind you that ONLY UNC made more consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances that LSU at one stretch during that time. It was 14 or so from what i remember.

You could literally count the fans in the stands while stopped at the traffic light at Nicholson and South Stadium.

So you were one of the lucky ones who actually got in the arena! My GF and I waited for a couple of hours on the ramp and could not get in to the Assembly Center because the student section was full. We ended up watching the game and drinking beer with the mice at The Bayou on Chimes Street.

I think only Kentucky (the "Alabama" of SEC basketball) has more SEC championships than LSU. March Madness took on a whole different meaning in Tiger Town back-in-the-day: crawfish, beer, and basketball!

People will argue that all day long with you because we did back in like 80 and 81 when our football team was bad, sell the building out about 75% of the time for hoops.

Even with the likes of Shaq and CJ we couldn't sell the building out consistently after that. You can go back and look at the numbers. When we played Duke with Shaq here the crowd was 13,100...that's 1,200 no shows back then.

But IMHO you're right. Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Syracuse, Indiana, Mich. St. St. John, Kansas those are basketball schools. Schools where you have Midnight Madness and they pack the building. LSU tried Midnight Madness even back in it's heydey with carnival barker Dale trying to seel it and even then couldn't generate the interst.

One more story, I can remember after a big hoops win over Bama on the road arount '91 or '92 I think being excited and getting on talk radio the next day wanting to hear hoops talk on Tiger Rag radio. One call all day about the game the rest was about football recruiting and that's when Curley was here and before recruiting really blew up like it has today.

Maravich averaged 44.2 points per game, Sampson averaged 16.9 points per game.

Terrible comparison.

what's terrible is judging a a player on points scored alone. Clearly Maravich was a better college player than Sampson, but Sampson was a 3 time college player of the year, lead his team to t1 FF and 3 elite eight's.

LSU is a good basketball school with tradition. In recent history there's been UK, UF, and Arkansas winning titles and you can aruge that LSU is in the top third of the SEC historically. What has Tenn won in men's hoops recently? I don't see multiple final fours.

What LSU needs to do is first improve it's non-conference schedule. Bring in Texas, Michigan State, Duke, Syracuse and so on. Michigan State is beatable this year. Can you imagine what winning in East Lansing on national tv could do for LSU? Even getting beat by Duke and Texas has positives to it.

We had season tickets until the beginning of last season.
The Bayou . True story. I was in there after class one day drinking a beer and shooting pool with a PREGNANT Girl. She kicked my arse. my buddies finally showed up and asked why I was hanging out with this girl. I said we played for a beer and she beat me.
That place was my hideout from my buddies most of the time.
I think they filmed part of a famous biker movie Easy rider (?) in that place - at least that is what the rumor. I believe Peter Fonda was in it.

I agree but there is no reason we cant at the very least put a competitive team on the floor. With all the money that football brings in for this school we should be able to attract some kids to come here. I mean we were a final four team not to long ago. Trent seemed to be on the right track at the start but wow we are just really really really bad

Anyone who lived through the Pistol Pete Maravich road show, DeWayne Astronaut Scales (still one of the most exciting players in LSU history, imv), 81 final Four team, Nikita Wilson's miss against Indiana. Derick Taylor's 35 footer beating Charles Barkley at the buzzer, the victories over Purdue and Memphis State, John Williams, Shaq and Chris Jackson, the 2006 run, knows that this isn't true.

And think of the great players we faced over the years. Magic Johnson, The Admiral, Isaiah Thomas,
the kids from Loyola Marymount, and on and on...

LSU is a basketball school if it choose to be.

Louisiana does not produce a lot of top Basketball players. Football is still king. Need Dale Brown to start hanging more basketball nets in the state again.
