Half of them followed or preceded the NC year.

2002 - Preceded 2003 BCS NC and followed 2001 SEC Title

2008 - Followed the 2007 BCS NC

2020 - Followed 2019 CFP NC

The ironic thing is the first unranked at the end of the season for each of our last 3 coaches all fell into this pattern.

Short of winning out and winning the NC this year, BK will be the first to follow or precede an unranked season without an NC.

Pretty impressive.

It is. Roughly one out of every 5 seasons. However, from 2000 to 2019, LSU had only 3 in 20 years. 2 coming after an NC, and heavily influenced by an injury or loss of a QB.

In 2002, Mauck got hear after LSU started the year 6-1.

In 2008, Perrilloux was the presumptive starter and a 3rd year player. He gets kicked off the team and you are relying on Andrew Hatch, RS Frosh Jarrett Lee, and a true frosh JJ.

Only 2014 really is inexcusable in that time frame.

From 2020-2024 you had 3 unranked seasons and 2 ranked seasons.

This year's team has reminded me a lot of 2008. Talent laden but when you have a coordinator who is totally unqualified and incompetent, the team will struggle.

Yup, the MalVeto year.
