Since LSU plays worthy opponents, most games are televised giving them the exposure. This is why over 90% of the nation was routing for LSU against Clemson with their weak schedule and exposure.

Actually, LSU has had a national presence for a long time thanks to WWL broadcast of it's games on Saturday nights. Much of the country received this signal and many became LSU fans who listened in before the age of every game being televised.
I listened in Akron, OH growing up. Although, I was already a fan after having been born in BR and attending games from age 1 thru 6 before moving to Ohio.

Joe Burrow is the biggest reason. The schedule (in the grand scheme of things) doesn't draw people in. A face of the program does.
I also think they saw the passion in our coach as well with his Geaux Tigers sign off afer every interview.
Also having the most prolific offense in college history and going undefeated helped as well.
And last the leadership by Joe and others created a brotherhood and chemistry like no other with a will to win.

It was a perfect storm assembled, an exciting NFL style offense, top NFL players across the board and a very like able and entertaining coach that were shredding the biggest names in college football.
