Stoval hired a 30 year old OC named Mack Brown for the 1982 season and recruited Dalton Hilliard and Gary James.

Stoval ran off Mack Brown after the '82 season because he was getting to much credit how good the team was.

This sounds like a recent legend.

Mack Brown was the QBs coach at LSU for all of one season, and was never OC. LSUSports.net lists George Belu as OC from 1979-83: LINK.

Risher went on to play in the pros for a little bit, but I'm not sure how much of that was due to a young Mack Brown showing up his senior year at LSU.

Morris Watts became the QBs coach for one year in 1983, a year in which Wickersham became the first Tiger to ever throw for 2500 yards in a season. Watts would return to LSU as OC in 1995.

Ed Zaunbrecher coached QBs from 1984 to 1990, and did a damn fine job in my opinion.

And just so people don't confuse the QB history (which they always do)...

Steve Ensminger, 1976-79
David Woodley, 1977-79
Alan Risher, 1980-82
Jeff Wickersham, 1982-85

Eh, it was more fun arguing in bars with beer bottles serving as keyboards.

OK. He was the QB coach but he got the most publicity for the success of that '82 team. I heared Stovall told Mack Brown something like "this is my team not yours" and Mack took a job on the OU staff in '83.

Anyway, Jerry Stoval is a fine man and belongs in the CF Hall of Fame. Congradulations to him.

George Belu may have had the de-facto title of OC, but he was the offensive line coach. Mack Brown was the QB coach and called all the plays. (A very creative and unpredictable offense) If Brown would have hung around, who knows how many more years Stovall would have lasted. He wanted to be a head coach though and left for Appalachain State after just one season. LSU should have hired him instead of Arnsparger when they fired Jerry after the 83 debacle. If that would have taken place, he might still be the head coach here and all those years of Archer-Hallman and DiNardo could have been avoided. One of the biggest mistakes in LSU football history. That and not grabbing Bowden when they had the chance.......
