The athletic department ain't hurting. I don't even really think the school is hurting from this. The big time research basically funds itself and the cutting isn't going to come close to touching the big time professors. They are probably cutting stuff that won't make a big deal to the university IMO. If they were I think it would be a much bigger deal than it has been.
The state should tell schools like Southern, Grambling, ULM, and SLU to become two year schools or die.

So if someone can't afford to go to LSU they shouldn't receive a 4 year degree?

Tiger Roach Spray Stadium?

The purchase of naming rights to the Stadium was proposed about 10 years ago by Bank One. Thankfully, the proposal was rejected - by whom I don't know. It seems logical that the State would be involved in the renaming as all of LSU's athletic facilities are publicly owned. I don't think the legislature, if that's whom has the power, would approve such an action. I hope it will never happen in my lifetime.
Also, the Athletic Department and the University are separate entities in terms of budgeting. Although the University shares in some of the profits created by sales of tickets and merchandise and such, their budgets are not intertwined. Athletic Department donates money to the university and pays for other expenditures, e.g. tuition, use of buildings, etc. but that's it. The University can become insolvent while the Athletic Department remains solvent. As long as we continue to have winning seasons, LSU athletics will be fine. Have a five year span of losing seasons and look out! I was at LSU during the Hallman years and I can remember going to games with only half of the stadium filled. That can hurt a budget.

If I remember correctly, this is no longer true. The buildings belong to the Athletic Dept. Again, I may be wrong, but I thought this was part of the changes that allowed TAF to be involved in expansion of the facilities. If the buildings had remained publicly owned then TAF wouldn't have been allowed to pay for the expansions/modifications.

Wrong. The University (as are most) is having major shortfalls in its operating budget. I read on the Daily Report a few weeks ago that Dr. Martin said LSU Costs will exceed Revenues by about $27M this upcoming year. I've also heard this situation has set LSU's Flagship Agenda back to something like 2001. My best friend works in admissions and this is information directly from his staff meetings. Note I said, Operating Budget, not endowment (although it certainly isn't growing quickly at the moment) or TAF. The athletic department is still in the black and will actually have more income this year -- thanks ESPN!

You may be right my friend. But, it was just in 2007 that Tiger Stadium was affected by the Louisiana Smoking Ban (La.RS 40:1300.252) which banned smoking in public buildings owned or operated by the state or subdivision. Tiger Stadium was deemed a public building for that ban.
Quoting an article from LSUSPORTS.NET:
"The “Louisiana Smoke Free Air Act” became law in the State of Louisiana on Jan. 1, 2007. The statute (La. R.S. 40:1300.252) specifically prohibits smoking in any public building, defined as a building owned or operated by the state or any other political subdivision of the state.
All of LSU’s athletic facilities are considered public buildings under this statute. Additionally, a public place also covers sports arenas, educational facilities and any enclosed areas to which the public is invited."
LSUSPORTS.NET
Also as of 2008 TAF only owns the suites, the east upper deck seating and 12 percent of all other seats in Tiger Stadium
Advocate
So they do own a portion of the seating, but not the majority as of 2008.
If something has happened since then, I am just not aware of it. I have been wrong before. Once.

why don't they consider selling the name rights of Tiger Stadium
You're stupid.

Huey P. Long Field
Personally, I'm against selling our tradition to the highest bidder, but, for the right price, I might consider Tabasco Field.

UL-M, NW St, SLU, McNeese - 2 year JC's.
La.Tech, Grambling, Southern, USL, Tulane and LSU - 4 year
(Grambling SHOULD be a JC too, but that would open up too many cans of worms and will never happen)
Why does the state of Louisiana need THREE 4 year colleges within 35 miles of each other? (La.Tech,Grambling and UL-M) Ridiculous!
And, if the State of LA is going to continue going against common sense and still have the "University of Louisiana" system, there should be more than 2 schools. Why isn't Northwest, SLU and McNeese included? Why isn't there a University of Louisiana at Natchitoches/Hammond/Lake Charles? How did those schools escape the UL@....designation?

The Athletic Dept is a different entity from the University. They do not and never will share money. The school is going through a layoff process that will help the budget in the longrun, but many jobs will be lost

There are 8 schools in the University of Louisiana system. As for the naming designations, I'm not sure.

The individual schools themselves decide if they want to change their name. I wouldn't be surprised to see the University of Louisiana / Hammond in the near future.

Herb,
The Athletic Dept is not having any financial problems.
No, we don't want to sell the naming rights to Tiger Stadium.

What about Cane's Chicken Tiger Stadium. I'm sure they could pony up some cash. And it has a nice ring to it.
"Chicken Tiger" I think applying this to Auburn would be more appropriate
