I've been a little bored this morning, so I started to go back through LSU's losses. Since we barely have any, It isn't difficult to do.

I believe the way LSU plays currently, the only chance to really beat LSU is to hit 3's. However, early in the season that was NOT the case. It is truly amazing how this team has grown and what Will Wade has done. Below are some key notes:

76-79 Loss vs Florida State:

-LSU allowed 22 offensive rebounds vs FSU
-LSU only got 4 offensive rebounds vs FSU
-Daryl Edwards played 16 minutes (played decently, actually)
-KBW played 9 minutes in a game that went to Overtime
-Tre Waters had 6 turnovers and 3 assists
-Marlon Taylor played 9 minutes with no stats and 3 fouls
-Darius Days led the team in rebounds with 6 in 16 minutes
-Naz Reid had 2 rebounds in 41 minutes

77-90 Loss vs Oklahoma State:

-LSU allowed Okie State to shoot 58.5%
-The combination of Reid/Smart/Waters/Edwards shot 8 for 37 or 21.6%

76-82 Loss at Houston:

-LSU was outrebounded 48 to 35
-KBW only played 6 minutes while we got worked on the boards
-Darius Days was a fixture in our lineup of playing upper teen minutes at this point
-Tre Waters had 5 turnovers on 3 assists while shooting 3 for 13
-Naz Reid vs Okie State and Houston only played around 20 minutes

What Our Past Losses Tell Us

So above are just some random facts and stats. Moving forward, I think some extremely key things happened to allow this team to get to where they are:

-Personally, I think Daryl Edwards leaving the rotation was huge for this team. He is a great guy, great leader, solid shooter, solid defender...but his minutes have been dispersed more between Smart and Taylor. This has given our guards much much more length and we've gone from having average athletic guards to elite athletic guards. Again, not saying AT ALL that Edwards is the reason we lost, but I think we became better athletically which helped on the boards and allowed Taylor to bring an energy to this team. LSU is 13-1 since Edwards's injury.

-The emergence of KBW. In OOC play, KBW was a role player who came off the bench. He is very limited, and our team did not know how to share the ball or play together. A scenario such as that made KBW barely relevant. Hell, in our losses vs FSU and Houston he average 7.5 minutes. Darius Days and Emmitt were starting over KBW and he couldn't find where he fit into this team. He's now a huge part of our defense and a main reason this team can bully people on the boards.

-Naz Reid. Beginning of the year, many many people were not happy with his performance. He seemed uninterested, sloppy with the ball, careless, not energetic. His style of play on offense can still leave people upset because he's so massive (I personally love his style of play), but it's the way he's playing defense and getting dirty on the boards. He is able to contest shots with ease on defense, and helps clean up any loose rebounds. He is now leading our team in rebounding.

Moving Forward:

I think national pundits and fans and anyone one else looking at this team should be breaking the season into 2 parts. The team that lost to Houston, FSU, and Okie State is not CLOSE to the same team. Our rotation is much different, our starting lineup has changed, our minutes have changed, out attitude has changed. We still struggle at times giving up too many open shots, but recently we have done a better job of not getting into large holes or going through long droughts. I think the way Wade has brought this team along, especially with how the season got started after Wayde's tragedy, is nothing short of spectacular.

If LSU continues this style of play, this style of toughness, this style of aggressiveness, LSU can and WILL compete and be able to beat ANYONE...yes, ANYONE. I predicted Elite 8 prior to the season, and I still think that is absolutely a possibility, but I'm starting to think this has potential to be even more special.

Yea, I knew while watching that Florida St game that this team was gonna be special. That game had an NCAA tourney feel to it, and we played well enough to beat them.

Can’t wait to get our tournament journey started!

ETA: as Chubbs would say...

Nice write up.

The rebounding on both ends becoming a strength is what has changed this team. Even in games they were winning, they were getting pounded on the boards, especially by other teams on the offensive end.

They have pretty much put an end to that. They can still be beaten in certain ways but it's a much smaller margin for teams to hang.

The FSU game is really the perfect example.

I was listening to the latest Geaux Hoops podcast yesterday and they said that Florida attempts the second most 3 pointers in the league behind Auburn. Although they don't shoot them well, Florida's volume scares me for that and the potential trap game reasons.

As much as I love Daryl Edwards, I do agree with you on this one. I think Edwards was going to get squeezed out of minutes, his injury only sped up the process and development of this team.

Great write up and points. Looking back it is easier to determine trends with this team and the Edwards injury certainly looks to be the turning point. KBW is the unsung hero but I do believe people are realizing just how important it is to have him on the court.

really good post. Naz is still a little sloppy with the ball at times. First half against Bulldogs, he had something like 3 turnovers in a row. But I believe in Will Wades Abilities to make everybody on the team better. Love this tiger team.

This team clearly has some Dog in it (both good and bad)
At times we play reckless and fall in love with the 3.
At other times we beat people up, attack the goal and look great.

This team is both fun to watch and annoying to watch all at the same time. When they want to, they can be Really, Really good. Other times you wonder what the hell your watching.

But, the most important thing of late is they refuse to lose.

Really not sure what to expect from this team in the tourney. It's always said that Guard Play win March Madness. If that is the case, I like our 3 headed monster of Waters, Mays, and Smart.
This team definitely has the talent to make a deep run. If we can find a way to shoot high 30%, low 40% from 3. This team could find it's way to the Final 4.

You're right, they do say that, but I think ultimately its defense, limiting turnovers, and second chance points.

I think if LSU defends the 3, hits a few shots (which is guard play), our ability to crash the boards can be a game changer

We have to remind ourselves that we are still a young team. But this young team is learning how to play better. I feel like this young team is attacking the goal more and more each game. If we continue to improve each game, the sky is the limit.

Reid becoming a more willing rebounder has been big. LSU played very well on offense AND defense vs. FSU, but got killed on the glass. And your numbers were wrong. Reid didn't have only 2 rebounds in 21 minutes. He had only two rebounds in 41 minutes! Even just a little bit of help on the glass from him would have likely led to an 8-10 point win for LSU. Since Furman he's been routinely getting 6-8 rebounds per game (1/2 on the offensive glass).

They've played more to their strength, FT shooting, and gotten away from the 3 ball

Though still very inconsistent, they've been able to play just enough defense when they HAVE to.

Maybe more than anything though, Waters has gotten back to where everyone thought he would be. He really struggled (relative to his standards) in the first 10 games. Now he's a true SEC POY candidate

Not sure why I put 21, I was staring at the box score. Going to edit, thanks

I think that's a big key people don't take into account. On a negative side, we get a little lackadaisical on defense at times, but on the positive side, we can really dig in on defense when we absolutely need stops. It's just about bringing that intensity for 40 minutes and I think we are growing towards that.

Absolutely. It's been brought up a lot, but Wade benching Tre for a few games really seems to have cleared his head and he's been dominant in SEC play
