Looks like that's what we'll see going forward. Growing pains for awhile but eventually turning the corner. The future could be awesome.

This is the third most veteran team we've had under Mainieri, behind only 2009 and 2017.

ETA: After further review, this is the 4th most veteran roster under Mainieri behind 2009, 2017, and 2015.

You sure? Maybe in the pitching staff but last year you had returning starters at all three outfield position, second, shortstop, and third base.

The Pulmonary Pumpers are already looking for excuses for when we don't win the SEC, and lose at home in a Regional.

Yeah thats a ridiculous claim. 2015 was almost all Juniors and Seniors in the field.

Only Sophomore to play was Jake Fraley

I mean in the aggregate, so including the whole team. The pitchers make up the biggest part of that, yes.

This is simply based on years on the roster (and for JUCO guys, .5 years for each year they played JUCO).

I did this for every roster under Mainieri to see the effect that roster churn was having on our success.

It doesn't take into account returning starters.

Roster Scores:

2015:

Roster Score
Total 31
Average 0.94
Pitchers 0.75
Catchers 1.00
Infield 0.71
Outfield 1.83

Roster Score
Total 37.5
Average 1.10
Pitchers 1.60
Catchers 0.88
Infield 0.67
Outfield 0.60

ETA: For reference, 2009 was 1.24, 2017 was 1.12.

ETAA: I just checked my spread sheet for 2015 again and it looks like I had not updated the .5 years for the JUCO transfers. That puts that roster at 1.106, where this year is 1.103. So this one would be 4th.

On a positional basis, outside of year 1, our worst years have come in years with our lowest scoring Catcher groups. Having a higher scoring Catcher group doesn't guarantee success, but a low scoring one pretty much guarantees failure.
