I need to see more of this at LSU before I believe it

So there have been a lot of examples.

Joubert
Milazzo
Beloso
Jones
Braswell

I won’t bring up guys like Crews, White and Berry but Crews did get better each year under Jay.

I wint bring up freshmen either because I generally want to see them year over year, but Milam steadily improved all year long from Fall to the end of the season.

Just as a team across the board we get on base way more. This is the first year under Jay we dipped below a .400 team Ob% and it was .395. It was .358 in 2020.

Basically Pearson, Neal and Kling didn’t get better.

Most guys have though.

I’m just calling balls and strikes. It’s not personal. When he starts to recruit and develop young stars at LSU like some of his SEC piers have the last few years then I’ll acknowledge it.

Seems like you are not acknowledging that but ok.

We will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Most of the guys you listed were Maineri recruits and I didn’t necessarily see marked improvement from any. A lot of Belosos issue was health. People forget he showed a lot of promise as a freshman but then faced Covid season and blew out a knee before another season. I’d submit that he was always destined to be a capable bat and returned to the mean when healthy. He lost a lot of weight early in his career that clearly affected his power.

Joubert was Joubert. His power numbers and Ks were actually better his first season at LSU. Probably a little better fielder his second season after improving his fitness.

Milazzo was better but still Millazzo. His bat just wasn’t ever going to be big time. I was disappointed in his defense this past season tbh.

Jones took a step. Still has a lot of work on against quality pitching. Can get lost against guys with real stuff. Jay gets the Ks down again and I’ll give him credit.

Of all those guys you mentioned, only 1 was a Jay recruit. Let’s see Larsen, Brown, Milam et al take a step and really turn into a string nucleus for this team. Then I’ll give Jay props for development.

Jay came to LSU with no titles but his super power was supposed to be hitting and recruiting. Other than the turnkey players out of the portal who would have been great anywhere they landed, I need to see that big reputation for recruiting and developing offense start to show with the high schoolers he brings in. Maybe this is the year that shows.

But once Maineries recruits left, only the turnkey portal players (that we basically bought) have been the main offensive contributors, and Hitting/offense this past season in his third year was underwhelming to me. Basically, hit HRs to score. We couldn’t move guys station to station. We couldnt steal bags or hit and run. We couldn’t do basic things like bunt situationally. I just didn’t see the brilliance in his coaching. The only way we could put pressure on opposing teams is when one of our 225lb players hit one of out the park. Otherwise, you didn’t have to plan a lot to face our offense.

With such a big reputation, I’d personally like to see more from Jay. Kling, Neal, Paul, Leto, Ruddell, Pearson et al came in with some high rankings and none of them could be developed to hit at this level. Jones seems like the only one. I’d like to see a competent and multi faceted offense and offensive construct that can beat teams in multiple ways — not just by slugging.
