Great recap.
One thing that the announcers noted during the telecast was that Hickey has only taken 11 free throws in SEC games this year. Unfortunately that didn't change against Bama. It could be because he is hitting only 52% and is afraid to get fouled. Do you think this could be a serious problem going forward / into next year?

They actually shot closer to 3x the number of FTs, but LSU did try and foul at the end of the game.
They shot 13 free throws in the last 1:22 by my count. Before then we had 14 to their 20.

I agreed with you until I started checking the stats. I was amazed to find that we are 4th in the SEC in team rebounding.
This is very skewed because we play so fast. We have been outrebounded in almost every SEC game this season. We take a ton of shots and make others take a ton of shots.

He couldn't shoot free throws last year, and he can't shoot them this year. He doesn't drive the the basket and try to finish strong so he doesn't get fouled.
When he drives, he likes to find space and float it in. Honestly, he probably is better off with his 50% FT shooting, but you'd like to force opponents to foul him more.

His 22 point, 11 rebound performance is just another JOB type game. He has been nothing short of impressive since fully healing from an injury around the start of SEC play.
The 5 tunovers are just killers though SOS. Granted he's doing better and better at passing out of double teams and otherwise. Still not great but steady improvement, so that I'm happy with. Three traveling violations, and honestly they could have called 6 on him. Got to clean that up.
I expected to lose this game going in but I thought Bama would come in with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove and play well. They didn't, they played poorly, but we matched them with another poor start.
Can't keep doing that over and over

His turnovers have been killer, but he was our only scoring threat Saturday night. And his traveling calls at least aren't turnovers turned into fast breaks which are the worst. We are able to setup defense after a travel. Would I rather him have 4 assists and 0 turnovers each game, sure, but even with his 5 turnovers he was the best player for us Saturday night.

And like I said he walked at least 3 other times and they didn't call it. He really needs to work some drills repeatedly that focus ont timeing the dribble and foot movement.
But he is making progress in other areas, passing and taking fewer bad shots (still has some work left there but he's better).

Got to agree with Mr. Ugly on this one. Johnny walks a lot that doesn't get called. I would put it more like six or seven times. For every questionable foul he gets there are usually a couple of walks he gets away with.
And yes South you are right too. He was our best player and only scoring threat for a while. But the poor footwork and walks aren't helping him score, just the opposite.

He's making progress on some fronts as SOS points out. He's progressed from never passing, to passing poorly and with no purpose other than to relieve pressure, to actually dishing some good passes at times.
He's cut down on the fall-aways and long jumpers, though he still sneaks them in from time to time.
He's even begun to shoot free throws marginally better.
I think the next hurdle is to have clearer sense of purpose when he gets the ball. Keep the ball a bit higher, and make the his move quicker before the double team locks him down, and improve his efficiency on jump hook or some other shot he can more consistently make.
He's improved the other aspects albeit a bit slowly. No reason he can't improve here. But unless he quits traveling, it will mitigate those improvements.
Geaux Johnny.

I like Morgan Alot but just had a thought, he is on about a 5 game streak of him having a wtf foul near half court and each time team was in bonus .

True, but he and Colemen are so good as the chasers/trappers in that press. He's a bit too agressive at times, but he'll help force his share of turnovers because of it.
When his offensive game catches up he'll be a good SEC player. And I see the foundation there that he can become just that.

Yes, he has 60 TO so far this year. And I'm sure SoS has more accurate efficiency stats that are a factor, but JOB's turnovers seem to come mostly from a rebound situation.
He's not the worst in terms of turnovers though, Sword (Misss. St) has 90, Goodwin(Kentucky)has 70, Bloodman (Miss. St) has 64 and Pressey has 84.
Pressey scores 12.6 pg and JOB 12.1, another interesting stat.
SoS, do you have the figures to show who the most efficient player in the SEC overall is?
And also the team with the most turn-overs in the SEC?
Stats don't tell the whole picture of course, too many intangibles in bball.

LSU has actually been pretty good on turnovers. They are 6th in Turnover% during SEC play turning it over on 19.8% of possessions.
Ole Miss is first turning it over on only 15.4% of possessions and Mississippi State is last turning it over on 25.9% of possessions.
Efficiency can be judged so many different ways, but like you said, others have more turnovers than JOB. He has been very important and most of his turnovers do not cost LSU opponent fast break opportunities which are the really bad type of turnovers.
