Could someone explain to me like Kamala how the receiving team gets 5 more plays?

Also I believe Saturday was the first game the Vols scored a TD on the first drive fwiw.

It’s such stupid logic to assume getting the ball first equates to scoring first. Especially when you punted 5 times in the first half against Auburn. 5 punts! And that was all on your offense misfiring. Not anything Auburn did special.

Teams that score first and win probably also have a defense that forces punts or fgs on opponents opening drives. I believe even this LSU team is capable of that.

I believe Tenn only had 3 points in the first round quarter against Florida.

I also think it sends a message that you are afraid of the other teams offense when you think getting the ball first somehow limits their possessions. And yes, he also said this. I would rather stay traditional and aways defer.

I would love to see stats about how often teams score first possession in SEC games or ranked games.

Since everybody loves to bring up the great Nick Saban. I wonder if he always chooses to defer.

The analytics say the team to receive first runs on average 5 more plays a game, thats what they are basing the decision on.

Not when you consistently have 3 and outs.

somebody with a lot of free time mapped out teams total number of plays vs whether they received first in 1st half or 2nd.

how or why, I don't know but it worked out to an average of about +5 if you get ball first in 1st half.

This is easy to examine in one of two ways.
First, you want to avoid The opponents strengths which in this case was the Tennessee offense. LSU starts on all fence putting Tennessee’s worst team on the field first and possibly more often during the game.
The other way is to play to your own team strengths which in my view would have been to defer and put LSU‘s defense on the field first which is arguably the better unit.
I am certainly not down on this team and encourage you all to be patient even with the coach

most recent article i found, he won the toss and elected to receive against Texas this year.

before that back in 2015, he would make his choice based on having wind at your back in 4th quarter.
Other teams chooses field direction in 2nd half if you defer, so on a windy day he ain't deferring if he wins toss.

but I'm sure Nick Saban is a complete dumbass and the coaches here on the Rant know way better than him.

Seems obvious that the analytics he should look at instead would be how often the team who receives first wins

This is a fair criticism of the approach imo.

Receiving the ball first doesn’t mean we score first. We had shown to be a better defensive team than offensive to this point.

Perhaps putting the defense on the field to get a stop and secure better field position is the easiest path to scoring first, not simply getting the ball first.

With the crowd pumped up for big matchup, put our best unit on the field and force them to move the ball in our stadium with a raucous crowd at their backs.

I’m not an opponent of analytics but there is definitely more that needs to go into that analysis imo.
