But my sources say he was worried he wasn't going to be offered. He signed a small amount with Dallas. If we offered more, he would have taken it. I am aware he wanted to play with the big O line at D though. Money talks.

He better get a huge contract when this crime of a rookie contract is up.
What a shame that was, and he was entirely blameless.

Beast. What a steal for the Cowgirls. Did the Saints even talk to Collins?
Payton tries to be so fricking cute when it comes to selecting players for the team. Tries to dump off "character issue" guys during the offseason then keeps Brandon Browner's dumb arse. It's no wonder at this point that he didn't call Collins.

The NFL udfa pool is structured. I believe the cowboys offered the most they were able and guaranteed it.
It wasn't a bidding war. It was a pretty set amount with little flexibility per NFL rules
quote:
Former LSU tackle La'el Collins signed a three-year deal, per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, who added the deal is worth a fully guaranteed $1.7 million, an unprecedented number for a player who was not selected in the draft and the max that Collins could have been offered.
So you need to ask your source some questions

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said the Saints looked into signing Collins and had conversations with "quite a bit with a number of people, including his agent."

I think he was looking forward to an opportunity further away from home (rather) than close to home, and I understand that," Payton said. "I think he found a good fit."

I know La'els brother. He said he wanted to get out of Louisiana and the Saints were never an option.

He would have been better than anyone the saints have drafted the last few years.
So yes, the saints fricked up by not drafting him. I don't care what else happened, he was sitting there rounds 1-7.

Recourse? He was an undrafted free agent. They always get to "pick", they just typically struggle to find two teams who want to sign them. La'el had the entire league courting him.
Other teams were told they could not draft him or go after him in free agency. The deal was already in place. I do not know specifics, except that Titans were very interested and could not apply. This is from a long time nfl position coach with Titans

I am convinced Roger Dodger threatened any team that wanted to draft Collins...

If something like that got out it would provide ammo for a lawsuit in my opinion. The whole domestic violence whirlwind started by Ray Rice is probably the main culprit. And we know how Jerry Jones feels about that.

Yeah, bullshite. It came down to who was willing to offer the structured max and who out of that pool La'el wanted to play for, period. There's no way in hell you actually believe NFL owners were just cool with passing on a first rounder for UDFA money just cause of some ambiguous gentleman's agreement.

I will ask. But the saints could have drafted him. Didn't have to go undrafted

La'el knocked him so far ahead that he was still able to make the tackle
Not only "knocked him so far ahead", but he sped him up in the process.

I mean there isn't much difference between late round money. It's just odd that 0 teams were willing to take the risk, especially the ones with lots of picks
