Lack of scheme overall

Not once did did our offensive or defensive play calling feel fluid. Say what you will about position groups or individual players, but the coaching was abysmal on both sides of the ball.
Offense ran zero RB screens against 6-7 man blitzes all night. Zero runs aside from inside zone. Zero scheming against what UCLA was actually doing on D. It’s like Peetz was just selecting random play in Madden. Johnson got happy feet and wouldn’t step up in the pocket cause he was put into unfavorable positions all night. He had guys just teeing off on him untouched play after play, and the coaches did nothing to adjust to it.
Our defense played in a base look on almost every single snap. Zero exotic looks, bluffs, blitzes, nothing. Reminded me of when Coach O made Pelini do basic calls cause the D couldn’t grasp it last year. Zero three man fronts, zero CB or safety blitzes. Just sat back and caught blocks all night. Almost no attacking. Makes me think that they believed 4 man rush would just get home all night. Meanwhile, UCLA was bluffing, showing multiple different looks presnap, blitzing from all angles.
Just complete and utter incompetence on all levels. The run game makes me wanna barf. Tired of seeing players in the program 3, 4, or 5 years look weak or soft. Where was the intensity, we got ran over by a veteran PAC 12 team. It starts and ends with coaching, end of discussion. Mathieu’s tweet last night sums it all up.
Rant over, hopefully this was a wake up call

I agree with this. Very vanilla and made zero adjustments to counter what UCLA was doing.
Pretty elementary offensive adjustments or even check downs from Max would’ve been very successful against that constant blitz. Burrow would’ve feasted on that open grass.
Defense we just kept letting them run the same plays and weren’t throwing any new looks.

Get ready for the same thing every week

Todd Harris literally gave an interview where he was bragging on how "simple" this defense was. Now you know why, its nothing but a base defense.

Not trying to make excuses but on offense we had a depth issue in the backfield that limited what they called in the run game. Personally I think you could’ve used Williams and at least tried to adjust but my guess is they didn’t trust it and that’s why it was so vanilla. On D I’m not sure what Jones could’ve done different with the LBs and safeties we have on this roster. Pretty much every chunk play came because a LB or 2 had basic individual breakdowns so I don’t know what Jones could’ve done. It’s a personnel issue so who’s making personnel decisions there, is it Jones or O?

If you don’t block or tackle, you can expect to lose.
