In any year you choose, there will be those feeling left out, in all sports. So, should they just not have any champions? What the flop?

we now have a 2 team playoff. People complain about being left out. Would a 4 or 8 team playoff be any different? Before you answer consider the fact that when the NCAA BB tourney is announced commentators, coaches and fans of teams with records of 19-11 cry about being left out.
who had a more legitimate argument that they were the best team in their sport? undefeated 2004 auburn in football or 2008 dayton in basketball? who did you hear more complaining from about not being given the opportunity to compete for a national championship? undefeated auburn or dayton?
youre always going to have someone that complains no matter what you do. how much they complain and the legitimacy of their complaints are drastically different when you add more teams in.
in basketball theres about a .00001% chance that the best team in college basketball that year is left out of the tournament. in football the chance is MUCH greater.
how many times since the inception of the bcs has there been a legit gripe or controversy about the 2 teams that were put in the championship game? just about every year except for 2 or 3. how many times has there been any controversy whatsoever about the 2 teams that play for the championship in basketball since the tournament started? i cant think of one.

Why is anyone to believe a 4 or 8 team playoff will eliminate the "crying" of a 5th or 9th placed team?
it wont. but the fact is the chance of the 2 best teams in the country, and even the best team in the country, being given a chance to win a national championship increases with every extra team you include.
whats more likely? the best team in the country being #3 in the bcs poll and left out of the current format, or the best team in the country being #9 in the bcs poll and being left out of an 8 team playoff.

In my opinion a playoff system makes the season even more important. It determines if you make the playoffs. How would that degrade the college football season? I just do not see it as an excuse for not doing the right thing.

yes its an extrememly lame excuse.
first of all, a loss at anytime of the season could drop you out of the top 4 or top 8 or however many teams they would have.
secondly, if they really feel it would make regular season games not as relevant, make it 6 teams and give the top 2 a bye in the first round. that way all of them have something to play for the entire season.

I don't see the Pac-10s model for postseason play on display.
The BCS is fine like it is. It's gotten the right teams in the championship every year except OU in 2004.
Which team can really complain? Mizzou, Kansas, Georgia, West Virginia, USC, Hawaii?
Georgia better hope and pray they beat the shite out of LSU this season. All of that whining about being the best.
Want to be in the Championship game, when all your fricking games or shut your mouth. It's that simple.

there is no way you can objectively prove that to be true.

all of them would have some sort of legit complaint(some more than others) except for perhaps hawaii because they arent from a bcs conference, and even thats a stretch since they were the only undefeated team.
mizzou, 2 losses just like lsu
kansas, only 1 loss
georgia, 2 losses and playing better at the time
west virginia, 2 losses conference champs
usc, 2 losses conference champs and playing better at the time

what happens when you dont win all your games and you have 1 or 2 losses like a bunch of other teams. how do you differentiate?

people only started getting on the playoff bandwagon once the BCS was created.. before that, split titles and poll based NC were widely accepted.. the BCS did nothing but try to get 2 of the best teams to play for a title..
i like the system we have now..
we all know UGAs gripe was bogus.. everyone agrees that you have to be the best in your conference to be the best in the country..

i dont get this argument either. yes the bcs is better than what we had before, by default. any system that tries to pit the 2 best teams against eachother in a championship game is better than what we had before, which was nothing.
just because the bcs makes an attempt to do this does not mean there are not better methods available for doing it.

quote:If its that big of a deal, let's start a super division of only BCS schools, and instead of playing in a conference, everybody must play everybody else. then at the end of it, we take the 16 best records and have a playoff, with a winners bracket and a losers bracket. Gotta make it double elimination just to make sure we get the right champion.

Crowning a "real" champion is never going to happen. Would take too many games, and the sport is too physical.

If its that big of a deal,
we're talking about determining the best team in college football here. what is a bigger deal with regard to that sport?
why is it that division 1 college football is the ONLY major sport that doesnt have some sort of playoff system? hell, even 1aa and divison 2 have playoffs. how come they can but div 1 cant?
quote:

how not? hoew many people do you see questioning kansas' national title in basketball this year? the red sox in baseball? spurs in basketball? giants in football? the giants even beat the supposed best team in nfl history this year. yet how often have you seen it said that they are not the nfl's best team?
quote:

a 4 team playoff would require 1 more game than is currently played. if its really that big a deal, take away the meaningless regular season game that was just added a few years ago.
again, why is it not too many games or too physical for EVERY other level of college football, or even football period?

i dont care. the current bcs poll. a new poll they come out with. coaches poll. why does that matter?

what does that even mean? what does who chooses the teams have to do with how many teams are in or the playoff format?

A plus 1 solves nothing. You are still relying on the same polls that vote teams 1 and 2. It's not going to improve anything.
Now, if you take 2 teams from each conference and have a playoff, without taking into consideration any polls, then maybe you got something. That is never going to happen though.
So far, the BCS has been pretty good. I say, leave it alone.

do you realize how much sense this does not make?
theres a better chance that the best team in the country is included in the top 4 teams in the poll than the top 2 teams in the poll. if you went to the top 6 teams that chance increases even more. the top 8 teams increases the chance even more. what dont you understand about this?
there is no poll thats 100% accurate, which makes it even more stupid that the fate of the college football season is determined by a poll.

if by pretty good you mean resulting in controversy the majority of the time, then yes its been pretty good.

How bad did we beat VaTech again? Didn't OU get skulldrug? Who beat OSU in the dome?
Ladies and Gentleman, I present to you, LSU the two time BCS champions.
The BCS got it right.
