quote:No, there are absolutely times when a guy with a great average should be pulled because he's in a slump and the team would be better off with someone else out there. But when the guy goes 2-3 with an rbi in his next three at bats, that obviously wasn't one of those times. Mainieri obviously recognized that last night wasn't one of those times he should be pulled. You obviously did not. Don't feel bad, I didn't recognize it, either. Only difference is that I don't have a problem accepting that Mainieri picks up on things that I don't. In fact, I'm damned happy that he does.
so you should never pinch hit for anyone if they are having a bad game?
you realize someone can be hitting .350 but in a 0-10 slump?
quote:Well, the scoreboard obviously gave a shite since one of those 2 drove in the run that was the difference in the game. Why you don't seem to care that he got two hits in three at bats after the point you claim he should have been benched is quite mysterious, though. I'm pretty sure virtually everyone else in the baseball world agrees that those two hits were pretty significant.
who gives a shite what his season average is, or if he was 2-6 which was better than his season average
quote:And Coach Mainieri felt -- within that game -- that Mikie should be left in because he would be likely to come through. You felt that he wouldn't. He did come through. How can you not see that this makes Mainieri right and you wrong?
coaching is all about feel within that game.

quote:How am I supposed to explain that? I'm not a baseball coach, and I'm damn sure not one as good as Mainieri. As you've already said, coaching these issues is about feel for the game. Mainieri obviously felt that keeping Mikie in and pinch hitting for Nola was the right thing to do. We won, so there's a pretty strong argument that he was right. Mahtook had two hits including the clutch game-winning RBI hit, so there's an even stronger argument that keeping him in was the right decision.
now explain why he pinch hit for Nola, when he knew our defense would be shot to shite for extra innings.

ahhh, go figure, you ignore the Coleman analogy. Guess you cant explain that either.
"but hey, his season ERA is 2.50....he had to buckle down at some point, right"?????
come on king ranter, your long essays can not mask your cluelessness.

quote:In what way? Do you not understand the term "coaching"? Mainieri made all these decisions, and he made them for reasons I do not and have not ever claimed to fully understand. You, on the other hand, are steadfastly insisting that doing the opposite of what Mainieri did in regards to one of those decisions -- whether or not to bench Mahtook -- was the right move. And after the point where you claimed that was the right move, Mahtook went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI, and made at least two more plays in centerfield without an error. So either:
ahhh, go figure, you ignore the Coleman analogy. Guess you cant explain that either.
A) you expected him to go 2-3 with an RBI at the plate and continue to make plays in the outfield without error, and you disagreed with Mainieri that this would be a desirable result; or
B) you did not expect him to do that, in which case you were wrong.
So, which was it? Were you wrong, or did you believe the performance he ended up having was a bad thing?
