First i have really noticed it, but do we have a no return policy going on? I couldn’t believe CEH fair caught 2 of the ones he did. One was on the 7 or so when he caught it and the other on the 2 with plenty room to run.

I understand the rules of getting it at the 25 but why not try to get better field position or possibly a return. Not a fan of it.

Yep! Take it at the 25, don't risk a fumble or injury.

We may never see another LSU kick return for a td in Tiger Stadium.

Who knew that back in like 1981 when Eric Martin ran one back at home that we’d never see it again?

I understand fair catching anything inside the 5. But I don't like the passiveness of fair catching everything. If you can catch it with a running start at the 8, go. If you can't get 20-25 yards on a kick return then you shouldn't be back there.

Can you imagine what Stingley would do after fielding a kick at the 7? Come on, give it a shot!

First you have to understand that Special Teams is not simply kicking a ball and running downfield. There is real calculated planning that goes into it.

When you factor in hang time (just below 4 seconds for a high ball landing at the 5), distance traveled ( 60 yds), measured time to secure the ball and decide on a return path, the speed of your gunners in covering distance ( think 4.5 secs to cover 40 yds...puts the gunners around the 25 yd line) and a kick that has placed the ball to the left of the right of the hash and consider the likelihood of returning the ball beyond the 25....the smart decision is to fair catch the ball.

Kick Off units have gotten much better at boxing in a return man to one side of the field and taking away running room.

Same, and not that CEH can't get 20-25 yards every return but I kick return is a great chance to get some of the young players touches. We keep hearing how electric Davis-Price and Emery are but that they don't really know the playbook well enough.

Well, there's not really a complex playbook for kick returns. I say put the two young RB's back there and let them get some touches.

Use special teams practice time for hands team work!! Not only did UT almost recover while Fulton didn’t make any attempt at catching the ball, but had he been able to stay on his feet he would’ve scored.

Ball is dead at the spot of recovery in every single level of football. Same type of rule as how you can't advance a muffed punt.

Factor in that it seems like there's a penalty called on 75% of punt and kick returns and the smart play is taking it at the 25. And like you said, a lot of the time that ball lands inside the 5 it's by design.

As far as fair catching the kickoff goes, remember that this year they have also outlawed the wedge block for return teams. Right now, the safest strategy for KO return units is to take the free 25 for a fair catch or letting it go out of the end zone. I am sure that as analysis catches up to the changes in how kickoff protections are working, we'll see some teams coach it differently. For now, though, I would except actual kickoff return attempts to be pretty rare for all top-level teams.
