Can a new scheme correct his deficiencies of last year? I am worried that he is still running with the first team.

Coleman, Cutrera and Riley will be the starting LBs

Sheppard will play a ton though at possibly all 3 spots.

I like Sheppard. Think he will be a solid (not great) player for us over his career.

Yeah me too, his only real bad problems were in his coverage, but he usualy makes the tackle

I would hope he is running with the first team because he is better than Cutrera. He was us second leading tackler

It's hard to single out Kelvin's deficiencies from a year in which the entire defense was basically anemic. Think about it...

Darry was hurt
Both DE's were lackluster compared to what was expected
We couldn't replace Dorsey
Couldn't replace Steltz, which might have even exposed Curtis Taylor a bit
And we certainly couldn't make up for the loss of both starting CB's from the previous year...

That's every position! Bashing Kelvin, without bashing everyone else is a little rash!

i watched the auburn replay the other night. He was repeatedly beaten while trying to cover on pass plays. There were three or four large plays for auburn that were his fault. He was running behind the guy going down the field. no ifs ands buts about it. Plus as i recall he sucked the same way in most other games. he was the glaring weakness.

He might have been "a" glaring weakness, but I think "the" glaring weakness was the cluster F with the coordinators not being able to follow up to Pelini...

Sheppard is playing a different position than last year. He's playing SLB, which means his only responsibility is the TE. Last year he was the WLB, with Riley the SLB. Considering Riley is much more athletic than Sheppard, that was a stupid decision on Malveto's part. Look for Riley to stand out much more there, and for Shep's deficiencies to be hidden better.

And it seems like Sheppard will only be the starter against running teams like Bama and possibly Georgia. Against Florida, Auburn, and all the other spread teams; Coleman will be the starter.

he was close on every play he screwed up, just not close enough to make the tackle before a big gain. My question is whether this is something that the new scheme can fix.

Yeah bc, for one, he won't be playing as much. He'll be splitting that position with Coleman, and won't play very much against teams like Florida. When he does play, it will be against running teams and he'll be lined up over the TE.

Eveyone was a step behind last year. Even our fastest players looked slow and out of place. I expect our defense to be in a better position to make plays this year.
