I met Bert Jones at a dove hunt years ago in Bernice, LA. We talked about his LSU days, esp. the 72 OM game. ( I was there). He told me that last drive was the "most fun" he had in his football career. Really great guy.

I've gotten very lucky to get to know him over the last five or so years. He is as down to earth and genuine as any athlete that I have met (which I can count on a few fingers)

Re BJ's Tiger Vision days, I ran into he & Paul Hornug (from N.D.), who was his co-anchor that yr, up at Tony Moran's 5 star restuarant/bar the Fri nite before a Sat nite game in TS. Both were blitzed & Jones cracked that he would never get a DUI as he always hired a La.State Trooper to escourt him around, home & on the road. Definitely partying that nite. Read in his book that he & another teammate had made a quick deer hunting trip one day before practice, got a buck but were running late, so they were dressing the buck in the locker room when Coach Mac walked in. Mac just looked at them, shook his head, and walked back out the door.

I met him several years ago at he and his brother's lumber place up near Ruston...ol boy has lineman hands - no wonder he could grip and rip a footbal. Seems like a damn nice guy though...saw him again a few days later in Baton Rouge filming a commercial at Hollingsworth Mazda and he chatted up some more with me like he knew me...fan for life of Bert Jones.

Bert Jones never started a game at LSU.

Yes he did. Mac turned to him when Notre Dame came to Baton Rouge and from that point on he started. Yes, the relationship between Jones and Mac was a little strained at times, but Mac still knew what Jones could do in terms of passing. The triple option was in vogue at the time and Paul Lyons seemed to be able to run that better. However, Lyons could not pass like Jones could. Jones was the better overall package. Unfortunately, LSU didn't use his true talents as well as they could have.

By the way, I don't think Booty could have carried Bert Jones' jock strap. Jones had a couple of pressure games that he pulled off that Booty didn't. Notre Dame and Ole Miss were a couple. Jones is a solid guy. I have no qualms as to his character as a man. Again, the guy's ok.

No, actually with the right coaching he would have done better!

Probably much better. He was a rare talent, better than 99% of those playing today.

Indeed!

Gotta to be one of the top places to get fricked up as a QB. Even Jones has admitted on occasion he would have done things differently if he had it to do over.

Does anyone know if Mac and Bert ever reconcilled? They were pretty aloof towards each other for quite awhile. I remember Bert making a statement that the highlight of his career at LSU was getting out and Mac replying that he wasn't the most coachable. I actually blame the then coaching staff for this more that I would Bert. They misused the guy and he more than proved that when he went to the NFL.
