I still associate his voice with being the voice of LSU football even though Hawthorne's been at it for quite a while now. I don't know who the better announcer is but, I don't enjoy Hawthorne at all because of the disgust and negativity in his voice. It's really a downer for me.

When did Hawthorne replace Ferguson?
I know it was long before the interwebs, etc., because I can remember all of us sitting around the radio one night, waiting for Ferguson to come on, and this new guy started talking to us.
If I had to guess, I'ma say 1979/1980ish....
Can someone help me out here?

I don't ever remember any negativity with John Ferguson; he always seemed to be so even keeled.

Loved Ferguson. Listened in the car with my Dad when I was a kid. Hot and with mosquitos, but I loved Ferguson.
When a receiver was open, he would say, "He's all alone in the moon light."

Hawthorne couldn't carry Ferguson's jockstrap.

Like I've said before...Had there been social media when Ferguson was around he would have been ripped just as bad as Hawthorne because he made a lot of mistakes....I like both Ferguson & Hawthorne.

According to what I read, he retired in 1987.

If I recall Hawthorne was doing play by play for about five years while Ferguson remained employed by the university without being on air.

Wish I could've heard John fergeson. Before my time.

Absolutely, Posted some time back about John Ferguson and Walter Hill with commentary by Doug Moreau. Absolutely loved the days and was so excited to hear the call on WWL. Now , I know that Mr. Ferguson got a little confused some times like he breaks thru the middle for a 2 yard gain and stuff like that but I truly loved his call and color commentary by Walter Hill. In fact when I posted, Mr. Hill's son posted on the thread that his Dad was doing well and I was so glad to hear that he was still living. Definitely enjoyed listening to them on the radio when I wasnt at the games.

My first game was a little kid Oct. 25 1969 21-20 over Auburn. From that game until Ferguson left broadcasting in the mid-80's - I listened to him call the games (except when I was a student in the mid 80's and the games I attended).
What I most remember about Ferguson's style is his disjointed description of plays: "Alexander """STEAMS!!""" around the right side for a loss of 2 yards."
"Risher...."""THROWS!!""" and it is incomplete."
That's another thing. Ferguson only ever said 2 words to describe an LSU pass play: """Com-PLEEEEEEAT""" or """"IIIIIIIIIIN-complete"""".
I also remember TGBFTL playing the "Go Big Tigers, Go" drum cadence when LSU had the ball, which I LOVED.

Thanks. Early '80s is about the time I could no longer pick up LSU on the radio here in CO.

I want everybody to sit and call every LSU baseball, football, and basketball game out loud and record it. Then compare yourself to Hawthorn or Ferguson.
EVERY ONE, EVERY YEAR.

Isn't Munson the guy who would say things like:

I had the distinct pleasure of being the spotter for John Ferguson and Doug Moreau for one season of Tigervision back in the 1980s.
Both men were, are, all class.
