I think it depends on the severity of the tear. I’ve torn it twice and had surgery both times, the second time time they cut off one of the bicep tendons. Both times I was in a sling for 6 weeks. Some of my teammates who tore theirs were only in a sling for 3 weeks and were back much quicker.
Regardless, he should be back for the opener, and as a running back the only issue may be reaching to catch a pass. The possibility for a different injury could also occur as he compensates for the injury or has a change in strength and conditioning while rehabbing.
