I have proven beyond doubt to have a far greater understanding of what "southern" means than you possess. However, since your question asked if I lived "in the North" and my response said "yes" and conditioned it with the caveat that geographically speaking (you know, that other meaning of north and south) DC is "in the south", my answer was obviously correct in regards to both meanings (both of which seem to escape you).

No one here even knows what we are arguing about. Is "Southern" geographic or are we talking politics/culture? Has southern become equated to "red state"? Does history matter? B/c historically, Virginia was very much a southern state.

The real split is between urban and rural, not southern and northern. Cities within southern states can be blue and rural areas in states like NY are red.
