Is is cynical of me to think that what he's really saying is

"I want to stay on the perimeter and shoot jumpers, not get physical in the paint"

I think that's pretty cynical. I think having him on the perimeter means he will get matched up on smaller players. Being matched up on smaller players means he can take them inside.

At the end of the day, he is a matchup nightmare for almost every SEC team. If he can play perimeter defense, having someone with his size going against 6' - 6'4" guards will have serious benefits for us.

The other point, SOS, is how many SEC 3s are pounding the opponent in the paint? That isn't how ball in the conference has been played, in, well maybe ever. This isn't the NBA where everyone plays man and some teams have mismatches at the three and post those guys high and low.

The threes in the conference are slashers, shooters, or some combination of the two. If we have someone that can run a baseline and use inside curls off that action to get to the hoop, we are going to be very dangerous, especially with Johnny just waiting to clean up or take a recovery dish and put it home.

So if Martin starts at the 3 who are the C and PF? Do we start with Odo at C and JOB at PF or JOB at C and Mickey at PF?

I think the two deep looks like:

1. Hickey, Quarterman
2. Stringer, Morgan
3. Coleman, Martin
4. O'Bryant, Mickey
5. Odo, Malone

However, I think O'Bryant drops down to 5 occasionally, Martin down to 4 occasionally, and Morgan down to 3 sometimes.

Top 4 in minutes played will be:
Hickey, Stringer, Martin, O'Bryant.

The rest will play between 5-20 minutes per game depending on opponent strengths/weaknesses. Against big teams, we add the Center position. Against some others we don't. If we need rebounding, we add the center. If we need pace (go down big), we probably drop the center and go to our press without a center.

JOB at 4 and Odo at 5. When Odo goes out, JOB slides to 5, Martin or Mickey go to 4. Morgan, Hammink, or Coleman take the 3.

pros want him at the 4 so im sure he's putting in the work to enhance his game there. i can't zero in on just one player to compare him to.

I definitely think he is a 4 in pro, but I think work at the 3 will make him more versatile at the 4 in NBA. college 4's don't need to step out and make shots whereas playing the 3 will offer him the ability to move around all the court.

Thought this was interesting from Johnny's meeting with the media yesterday:
quote:

On the effect of Jarell Martin playing the small forward position…
“It gives you an opportunity to play a little bit differently. On the defensive end, you can switch. Offensively, you can post other guys and force other teams to play a certain way. If you’ve got Jarell in the game, be it with Johnny (O’Bryant III), Jordan Mickey or Darcy Malone could be in there with that group as well or John Odo, you can actually put Malik Morgan at the two and Tim [Quarterman] at the one. That’s a pretty big team, or put Shavon Coleman at the two. It makes for a very active and long team when we can go big with that combination of guys.”
