That's why you put your elbows out and pivot toward them--legal and they get the message to back up.

I don't disagree, but tht approach will cost a turnover. The loss of even one possession in a tight game could result in a defeat.

Shawn Burks - (See LSU Linebacker 1980's) use to do that when he played h.s. basketball at Central and nobody dared come close after he got a board 'cause your teeth would be knocked to the back of your throat. He was a hustler in every sport he played.

I'm not a fan of this one. If you're not swinging your elbows, I say allow the player to make space anyway he wants.
I agree with you to this extent... going back to the fundamental definition of a foul... initiating contact to gain an advantage.
If you tuck a basketball in your chest like a football, you're going to be swarmed and tied up, with numerous fouls going undetected.
Personally, I think the rule should be the same, but the refs. have to determine the intentionality in the context of the game. If you mean to hit a guy in the face with an elbow or anything else, it's a flagrant foul. If you're swinging your elbows around like a neanderthal, your going to get the refs'. presumption of intentionality.
