I agree, but I think they should use the BCS system to determine the teams, and you should have to win your conference to get in.

To the OP:

perhaps doing away with pre-season polls may go a longer way to making this system more fair than adding another game.

You are 100% correct. No matter what number you set it at there will always be teams right on the outside thinking they got left out. However, the difference between 1 and 5 in football is sometimes pretty large, and this seems like the most logical place to cut it off in CFB.

Now this season the argument isn't between #1 and 2...it's between 2, 3, 4. It's not fair to LSU this season, but by that logic nothing is fair to LSU. They should just he handed the NC trophy tomorrow. And nobody wants that.

It would be stupid to face a team you already beat, at home no less, but, that was not the question you posed. I just pointed out that your scenario would leave us in the same exact spot, or even worse, going in with needless injuries or burned out players. How many professional teams have gone 16-0? If it were that easy, everyone would have done it...

So, as a LSU fan, if we'd have lost to bama 9-6 you would say that we don't deserve a rematch? It's very possible that the two best teams in the country could come out of the best conference in college football.

As a matter of fact, I bet in very many years in a +1 system you would have two sec teams competiting as top 4 teams.

You still keep the bcs this way (which I really like), you keep the bowls (which is the greatest thing about college football), you keep the importance of winning your conference with bcs tie ins remaining, and you give the little guys a chance to crack the top 4 And compete.

I'd be all on board for getting rid of pre season polls.

Read my post right under yours...this season nothing really seems to be "fair" to LSU.

frick a +1, a true Final Four is the way to go. A +1 would keep things the way they are now, and just pick 2 teams for another game once the bowls are played. A true four team playoff is better. A +1 could theoretically still let the #6 team play for the title of the other teams lost their bowl games or weren't impressive.

If I wasn't an LSU fan I would say so. Obviously, putting the label of LSU fan on me would skew my opinion.

Then the BCS works just fine. Because that is what is happening this year. The two best teams are playing each other...again.

I'm assuming that is what a plus 1 is. Take the top 4 BCS teams, play the games in the Bowls. The winners play 8-10 days later in the BCSCG.

The plus 1 I'm talking about is exactly what you are calling a four team playoff. You didn't read what I was calling a +1 system very well. Whatever your version of what a +1 would be, and mine are totally different.

Nope. The "+1" that has been discussed does not pair up the top 4 teams prior to the bowls. It would play the bowls and then have a poll to select the best 2 teams after the bowls. So, if the #5 team runs it up or beats a better opponent than the #4 team, they could jump them. Final Four needs top be the mantra.

There is no "your" definition and "my" definition. It is what it is, and it isn't a four team playoff.

quote:

Playoff proponents argue that a bracket-style playoff championship should replace the current Bowl Championship Series, while others advocate for a Plus-one format, which would create a single national championship game with participants selected after the conclusion of the traditional bowl season. This debate has been ongoing since at least 1971.[1]

Didn't we just recently bump the regular season from 11 to 12 games? 13 if you play in a Conf championship game.

Yep, sure did.

I bet if you ask Oklahoma state, Stanford, Virginia tech they would be all for it.

I'm sure they would be too, and so would their fans.

The problem is twofold: 1) The top teams don't play enough against other top teams within a given season. 2) A single season isn't enough to sort out everyone who deserves to contend.

Every plus one I have heard is set up like I said.

See my link above. Many assume that people talking about a Plus 1 are referring to a four team, bracketed playoff, but that is not so.

There is no "plus 1" system in place so how can it "be what it is." I'm not talking about any system they have discussed. What you are calling a final four, I'm calling a +1...but we are both calling for the exact same thing.

The Conference commissioners have had formal discussions of the "Plus 1" system, so yes, there is a definition of a "Plus 1" proposal. I know what you are describing, and I agree with it, but that is not a "Plus 1" system. It is a playoff system.

All you've done is added another game to the season, and pushed the bitching back to the 5 and 6 place teams.
