I heard a rumor that the South End Zone expansion was going to cast such a shadow that the turf would not going to recieve enough natural direct light to sustain it, and would ultimately have to be replaced with a different type of sod or an artificial one.

LSU officials actually came out and said that there's no truth to that at all. Plus, turf would be terrible in BR. It gets way too hot and it would be slippery all the time from rain/humidity. Plus, more injuries. Who wants any of that?

Yea Red Solo Cup, he only does the new grass which is called Championship Bermuda
You mean "Celebration" Bermuda, which is shade tolerant.

I know this is BS because it is the SOUTH end zone. Do people really not know how the sun works? How has this not been brought up yet. There will only be marginally more of a shadow if any.

Do you know how the sun works?

Just because the sun rises in the East and sets in the West doesn't mean the position of the Sun is directly overhead. Often the Sun is positioned in the southern part of the sky.

Do other SEC stadiums that have a full upper deck circling the stadium have artificial turf? NO, we will not have to go to artificial turn in TS.

I have not heard this, I would think it would be too hot for artificial turf, in august through October it gets pretty sweltering inside the stadium.

Why did the West and East uppers not block out any 'natural direct sunlight?'

Roommate works with the turf management guys. It is likely true. They are doing everything they can to figure out if they can prevent it.

Thanks for acknowledging it's a real shadow and a serious question.

So, any of you turf guys, will they be able to find a shade-tolerant natural turf that works in our climate?

May have to switch to a non-full-sun grass but that's about it.

Ummm, yes, SOME people know how the sun works...We live in the Northern Hemisphere, so as the earth tilts on it's axis the arc of the sun moves further and further into the southern sky (causing winter). The shadow cast TOWARDS THE NORTH will get longer and longer as the days grow shorter.

It's why moss grows on the north side of trees.

Take all the time you need getting your foot out of your mouth.

Right, because the sun rises in the south and sets in the north right?

Yes and it will be purple turf.

Fact: There is purple turf in Tiger Stadium.

Granted, it's inside the locker room area, but it's actually purple turf. They put it there after the purple turf April fool's joke so they could say there's purple turf in Tiger Stadium.

Right, but it still spends plenty of time up in the sky. I can't imagine this will be a big deal

There are some advantages. Most of them economical. .i.e. very low overhead on upkeep. Also, provides a fast track for a team built on speed.
