Didn't see anything bit paperback. From what I understand this is the best LSU book out.
After seeing all of the negative comments, I thought I would post a more positive review:
As a fan who grew up listening to LSU football games on the radio, on lazy fall Saturday evenings in the early 70s, I really enjoyed the book. The fact that I was a big Coach Mac supporter only fueled that. It is a somewhat dark and gloomy picture at times. However, there are many great moments in there, too. Bradley is a writer by trade, and this was a difficult, extremely personal story to write.
Some don't like it because it's not peppy. Others, because it doesn't focus enough on LSU history. I like it, because it gives me a little insight as to what the guys about 10 years older than me went through in being recruited, playing for LSU and then having to find something else to do with their lives. I knew a couple of guys from that era - Bobby Moreau and Chris Williams - Bobby's been a ref for years now, and Chris had a brief NFL career - they were contemporaries of John Ed.
The book is less about LSU football and more about John Ed Bradley, for sure. However, if you never played at that level, reading the book is about as close as you're going to get to those emotions. I think it was a very sincere book from a talented writer. It's not a novel, a reference book or a "Rah, rah! Geaux LSU!" book.

I saw it more as a guy who got to be BMOC at LSU, (and in his hometown), which is something that 99.98% never will NEVER get close to... and made it seem like it was a burden.
If he would have come off as "I was fortunate to have the experience, but it wasn't for me", or hell, at least indicated something like that ONCE, it would be one thing. But, the tone of the book was just how "terrible" his free ride to LSU and chance to play SEC football was for him.
Cry me a river, John Ed.
I *do* think the book is "required reading" for the LSU fan, if for no other reason than providing a glimpse into LSU football in that era. But I've read literally dozens of sports books that are better.

Basically called John Ed a whiner.
He was/is a whiner. The whole book was basically one big whine fest.
Okay, we get it, you battled depression. That sucks, but it doesn't mean you have a good story to tell.

Yeah, that was basically my takeaway.
I went into it thinking it was about LSU football and then came to realize it was about his life. That's fine... I'm not going to hate a book just because it wasn't what I expected.
But the story just sucked. It was just one bitch fest after another about how basically he did nothing in his life that he ever wanted to do because everyone else "made him" do this other shite.
Get the frick over yourself dude.

what a bunch of miserable shits on this board.
the man painted at verite' look at lsu football for the individual at the time, his experience extended outside of the stadium, and some may not like that, but these kids play football for 30-45 hours a year, thats not even a 3rd of a week, there were some great moments he talked about there from his life....
