Is the 85 scholarship limit a thing for the first game of the season or for spring?

I believe this is a key factor of why Sabin retired and may push others out or to the NFL. There is no way to predict what your roster will comprise from season to spring, then from spring to fall camp. The risk of undue loss can be offset by oversigning….but by how much? Almost impossible to pin that tail.

Out of control NIL, unlimited transfers have fricked this shite plumb up. And I used to contribute, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna throw money at players who are shopping themselves and may be gone next month etc.

Thats the way it used to be. Active roster, meaning when the semester starts. The portal has changed so much rules related that it's hard to keep up. Still haven't gotten any confirmation on it. Took me hours to finally find a tweet that confirmed the Bama kids were SEC transfer eligible. Too many just assuming we can take everyone, from everywhere, all the time to bother confirming who, when and from where we actually can take kids.

With the class coming in we’re over 90 right now. It’s before the season starts

At the end of spring practice coaches will be telling players at all programs who won't be having their scholarships renewed. They will be able to assess how many transfers they will seek to fill needs at certain positions and perhaps leave a spot or two for a potential surprise transfer during the summer. Any unfilled scholarships could be awarded to a walkon during fall camp.
