we routinely beat teams with more talent because we were fundamentally sound. Also its not like we have been playing top 25 teams that have a severe talent advantage....so I guess the real question should be is TJ a good coach?

Young. Young. Young.

The teams beating us are more experienced and have had more time to gel. We're also making a lot of stupid mistakes, which freshman will do no matter who their coach is if they're playing 30+ minutes a game.

You don't think those basketball teams have talent? E'Twaun Moore is a senior and is a damn good player for Purdue. He was a top 50 player coming out of high school.

Those teams have talent, you just don't know it because you aren't really knowledgeable on the subject matter.

I said those teams "for the most part" have avg players. Meaning they aren't loaded like Kentucky, Duke, and UNC are year in year out. I don't claim to be an expert but if you think that tems like Wisconsin and Purdue have the same level of talent as UK, Duke, and UNC you are not very knowledgeable on the subject matter either.

NBA caliber talent isn't common on most college rosters.

Well I think it's dumb to lay a blanket statement about those teams not having talent, because they do. But they also have good coaching as well. The Big 10 is a very good basketball conference and you need both to win in that league. Duke has a lot of career guys on the roster right now. Outside of Irving, they are stock full of talented kids that aren't talented enough to go early to the NBA. That's why they are good. They're talented, but they are also experienced.

But for the most part, talent can win despite coaching in college basketball. But experience is also very important. I think there is talent on LSU's team, it's just young and inexperienced.

To answer this question correctly Duke basketball should tell you all you need to know. This year being a notable exception, Duke for my money is usually the least talented of the elite teams. Yet, they are just that -- elite. Coach K makes the difference.

So to answer the OP, you need a base level of talent sufficient to be successful, but you need the right coach to keep you there, year in and year out.

For those who think that talent trumps coaching, please see LSU basketball, circa 1988 and 1989.

Obviously both are important but to answer the question of which is more important: The answer is coaching and it's not debatable IMO.
