miami - lost butch davis, has yet to recover

fsu and michigan -legit case

usc - won 10 games last year, will probably be preseason #1 (are you talking prior to pete carol (sp)?)

texas - not sure what to think about mac brown, but just when you think he's done he makes a run

ohio state - won a bcs bowl vs arkansas in 2011, had tressel not fricked up they would still be good. they only had 1 maybe 2 down seasons under him.

as far as LSU goes, i don't see LSU going anywhere anytime soon. unless les goes somewhere else.

I think LSU will be a contender for the next 5 yrs... We had our "down cycle" from 1960-2000... we got some good karma comin our way!

A LOT of people here immediately identified Jan 9th as the beginning of the end.

And do you agree or disagree with this? Just asking not saying it is.

FIFY

Has nothing to do with LSU success, it was the fans throwing in the towel with Les Miles.

I think these two are the prime example for the only reason LSU may have one in ten years. They had two coaches (Bowden and Carr) that probably were there too long. Their voices grew stale and it affected the programs.

Strangely enough, it would make several "fans" so happy to see us go down hill. WTF!?

Three things that could feasibly send LSU into a slump:

1) coaching change/poor hire
2) NCAA sanctions
3) recruits stop coming because LSU isn't the "cool" school to go to anymore

For every bad hire Miles makes, he pulls off 2 great hires. Even the "bad" Crowton hire netted a crystal trophy.

2) NCAA sanctions

If nothing happens to Oregon then certainly nothing will happen to LSU or Cal.

3) recruits stop coming because LSU isn't the "cool" school to go to anymore

Miles is probably considered the most entertaining coach on TV and he keeps pumping out NFL draft picks with a lot of them being early selections. Also, add in characters like Brad Wing, the Honey Badger, and the defense as a whole, LSU is definitely the "cool" school.

It all depends on what you call a down cycle. For some of the fans here, it is a down year if we don't win a national title EVERY freaking year. Then again, some of us have followed LSU football in the 90s (I'm gonna hunt you down for reminding of those days!).
If you call the 90s our "real" down years, LSU football's current state is NOT EVEN CLOSE to being on a down cycle. Heck, we won two titles in the last 9 years. We won the SEC and played for the national title game last year.

I believe LSU is right outside of the top 10 most successful football programs of all-time. It was probably outside of the top 20 until the great run under Saban and Miles. I think LSU will be within the top 10 very soon. I'm talking about within the next couple of years.

Look at Miami , FSU , Florida , USC , Ohio St. , Michigan , Alabama , Texas etc and you will see this pattern.

almost every school you mentioned suffered ncaa sanctions. if we keep our noses clean and stay off the coaching carosel we will build stability and continuity. life is cyclical and adjustments must be prudent (just ask GM, IBM, Kodak and USSteel) but as long as we recruit, develop and graduate kids from Louisiana and our neighbor states....we should always be a player.

get busy livin'...or get busy dyin'

Nebraska went like 35 years without a "down" cycle.

So no.

I don't agree with your premise. When you look for patterns you will usually find one. If you say Florida has cycled down, then LSU did it all ready with 2008 and 2009.
