Is it just me or have television announcers just gotten that bad?

All the techno graphics in the world don’t make up for not knowing anything about the game. The mute button has become the most used part of the remote for television games. I’m thankful for my old fashioned radio for the call, and that we still have some great play-by-play people and analysts. Just wish you could always synch it with the TV.
Nice recognition of Jim Hawthorne and the late Larry Munson here.

So many televised games means that finding good men to man the booth is a hard job.
It looks like they haven't.

Jim Hawthorne is the worst I have ever heard, so negative for his own team it is hard to convey. Larry Munson was a legend

I've said it before. I'd pay extra to just have the game and field microphones. Only announcer I want to hear is the stadium play by play guy

Maybe, but by halftime you would be asking for your money back.
NBC tried it some 30 years ago, results weren't so hot.

Patches, I'll agree with you that Hawthorne gets negative at times. TN last year and the clock management problems illustrate that. Personally, I don't mind a local announcer questioning coaching decisions of his own team given the dollars coaches make these days. I suspect that you and I would agree that all SEC radio announcers put those new TV commentators to shame. In the olden days, you did have some good ones on TV, but I have a hard time naming any today.
