I don't know that 40's were run as commonly back then, but if I recall correctly, Cannon ran the 100 yard dash in something like 9.4. That was and really still is VERY fast. I would be very suprised if Cannon did not clock a 40 in the 4.4's or 4.3's given his track accomplishments.

you never know, if those guys were exposed to the same science as today's athletes, many would probably still be competitive.

Its also not fair to compare him to the guys he played. After they were all white. Is that not also an unfair assessment?

Recall in that movie, Everyone's All-American, at the peak of his career, he questionably beat the crippled black fry cook in a foot race.

While I agree to a certain point, it can be a useful comparison for certain exceptional athletes. I have little question that Jim Thorpe could play safety or running back today in Division I, and perhaps the NFL. Cannon and contemporary Jim Brown would likewise have success in today's game, and at the professional level.

Would any of the three be dominant players today? Perhaps not, but the fact that their athleticism is objective and broad based (they were all exceptional multi-sport athletes), and they did not have the advantage of modern training and nutrition (Thorpe, especially) make their accomplishments even more impressive in hindsight.

Billy Cannon's time for the 40 was in yards, not meters. But, having said that, he would have been a star FB player in todays game. He didn't have all the strength and conditioning help then that players have now. Yes, he was a freak athlete. Tinsley was also. Tommy Casanova was too. Casanova was thought by Charlie Mac to be so valuable to the team that he didn't let him play offense much.

100 yard or 100 meter?

If meters, then that one of the funnier things I have read on this board in awhile.

Don't think they were running the 100 meters in 1959.

Yes, it was yards.

i had no idea he had tourette's.

You really didn't know he had it?? That was a pretty well known fact when he played, in fact, he sometimes got called for technicals for comments, without him knowing what he said. They had to warn the refs before games...
