After watching College Football for over 50 years I have seen the Playoffs come full circle in many ways. A few years back we went to the BCS formula to erase the corruption and human influence in the NC game.
However, once upon a time , 2 teams from the SEC played in the NC game. The NCAA and the News Media could not have that, so it was changed.
Now, back to corruption, influence and speculation again. SHAMEFUL.
Frankly, while there may have been legitimate issues w #3 and # 4 being left out in the BCS era, the formula got it pretty darn right.
Computers can track small deviances better than humans.
All the NCAA had to do, was to add 2 more teams, or have a 6 team playoff with #1 and # 2 getting a bye .. and VOILA, it would have all been fixed.
Now, we talk about the BEST 4 teams, but everyone knows that’s BS, because they are analyzed conference by conference….so is it the best 4 or not.
HUMANS, POLITICS and POWER are at play once again.

Conference championships - NOT # of wins- is how 4 of the 5 power conferences decided a true conference champ is crowned. The playoff system was setup for failure by creating a 4 team playoff with 5 power conferences.

2003 Oklahoma/USC, 2011 Alabama/Ok St, & 2016 Ohio St/Penn St are reasons to discontinue conference championships and resort to a round robin type of conference schedule with a basketball type of tournament system with fewer teams to crown the national champ.

Lol at the people talking about Ohio St being the bigger brand. This is Penn St we're talking about, not Oklahoma St. If this was pre-scandal with JoePa at the helm, does anyone actually think there'd be any debate that Penn St would be in the playoffs and Ohio St would be out?

It's not about the bigger brand, or money. Condoleezza Rice doesn't give two shits about what brings in better ratings. It's about a committee of people who made their decision long ago and are now trying to justify it to show they were right. I've always thought that CFB went the wrong way post-BCS. It wasn't the computers that were the problem, it was the polls. Moving the selection to a MORE biased and subjective process has been a detriment, beginning with the 2004 season.

Fix the playoff? 8 teams, 5 conference champions. Top 8 non-power school gets an at large, the other two spots determined exclusively by computer ranking based on a set of metrics agreed upon before the first snap of the first game of the season.

Penn State should be in. They have the same number of wins, defeated Ohio State head to head, won their division, and won their conference. Also, They had to take on another opportunity to lose when they played a top 6 opponent in Wisconsin in the Big 10 Championship. Meanwhile, Ohio State sat at home and did nothing.

I'm starting to think that conference championship games should be done away with and a Round Robin type of schedule should be used to prevent strange situations like this.

Expanding the playoff to 8 teams would also be helpful, obviously.

Be careful what we wish for, if LSU would have handles business like they were supposed to we could easily be 11-1. Heck we could be 11-1 every year. Not saying we can't beat Bama but we should run our schedule. If that was the case we would be sitting righ there at #2 and in the playoffs
