I like Gruden. He's a great QB coach and he has fire in his belly. I think he'd be wildly popular with the fans and his experience in the NFL would be a great recruiting tool.
Last years QB class spent time with him (documented on ESPN) and the comments from Clausen, Tebow, Bradford, et al were that they would have all loved to play for him.
Would he come here some say ... Is 3M a year more than he's making now ?
Money wouldn't matter to him. He's already said how much the booth is benefiting him with his family. Not to mention he's a prime candidate to bolt for the NFL again. No thanks.

Look what happened to UT & Michigan when they got rid of their guys
Michigan got one of the most successful coaches in the country from another BCS school...a guy that turned down Alabama just a year earlier.
As for Tennessee, I don't know who was interested, but they hurt themselves by waiting too long to get rid of Fulmer so that whoever replaced him had a long and difficult rebuilding job to do. Miami didn't wait as long to fire Coker, but still probably waited a year too long. Even so, they are back in the preseason top 10 talk going into this year.
But even if there's only a 30% chance of getting someone better than Miles if we fire him, that's still better than the 0% chance we'll have if we don't fire him.

Our next HC:UN-frickING-KNOWN-HINSON. Our opponents would shrivel up and die when the Unknown One strapped on his axe and started ripping out tunes about wormen, whiskey and mayhem. We wouldn't even have to play the fricking games.

Even though I do not believe Les will be fired this year, I think a good hypo-candidate would be Patterson.
He's a clone of Saban -Xs and Os on the defensive side of the ball, but without the primadonna attitude.
He also has a great desire to be good on Offense as they finished in the top ten in total offense this past year.
His two major question marks are:
1. Recruiting- Can he recruit top ten classes at LSU?
2. Plays in a small conference - Can he bring that same level of winning to the SEC?
In my humble opinion, I believe he could recruit very well at LSU given our current crop of talent in-state (given our outstanding facilities and emphasis on education with the Cox center) as well he could go into Texas regularly and get good talent bc he is familiar with the area.
I also believe he could bring good results to the SEC. TCU plays 3 tough OOC games a year to see where they stand against teams nationally. They usually play teams with better talent than they currently have. Ex. Utah, Clemson, Oregon State, BYU etc.
It's not TCU's fault that they play in a crap conference. They have to play those teams. But so did Bowling Green when Urban coached them. How is that working out at UF?
I think Patterson would do a bang up job but you never really know. And that's with any coach at any school not named Saban and Meyer.

Here's how I see this happening, and it's something I've been saying for a long time now.
LSU wins 10+ games this year. Rich Rod is fired at Michigan, and Les Miles is tabbed to be his replacement. Les says yes to his alma mater.
IMHO LSU's coaching search starts with Bo Pelini. He's been here already, recruited here, and still has excellent relations with many of the top high schools in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. He's made a name for himself, and he's well-regarded by everyone across the country.
Basically, you have to at least make him say no.
If Bo takes the job, we've hit a home run and can relax. If not, then the next round of names should look like this IMHO:
Chris Petersen-BSU
Gary Patterson-TCU
Kevin Sumlin-UH

Totally agree with the OP. While we may no longer be an elite, dominant program, we should be happy with what we have. I mean the next guy could be worse, so why take that chance?
We're just LSU, so why would anyone worthwhile want to come here?
We need to just maintain the status quo for as long as possible, for fear that our attempt to rejoin the elite will fail.

I agree with your assesment but you should know that Utah and BYU are both in the MWC (same as TCU)

You said it bro, why reach for the stars when we can be happy being mediocre? These people don't understand that there is a 50% chance that we get someone more mediocre than Les, so why roll the dice at all? Geez. Nobody would accept 4 million dollars to come coach at a university that can cherry pick the best players in the state and has national appeal because the fans expect them to win the SEC and that type of expectation is just plain ridiculous.

These are all reasons why Les getting canned is scary. We have no clue who JA will hire and I have no reason to think he'll do the right thing. Not to mention a school firing a guy this soon after a NC is going to wiff on several on the top of the wish list.
One great thing is we will be packed with talent if we make a switch and that could help us out. Even if it didn't in 04

Sorry. Ill edit. I was really trying to convey talent discrepancy though when referring to utah in that aspect. For some reason my ignorance on that conference i forgot about byu.

I find it ironic that this very website could be a definitive reason as to why we could not land a top flight coach and end up with someone like Houston Nutt.
I think nationally, this website (and the idiots herein) is easily becoming the mouthpiece for LSU athletics, particularly football.

Why do you think LSU would have trouble landing a good coach? The reason we didn't have the pick of the litter last time was the piss poor timing of Saban.
With the high salary comes high expectations and let's be honest, if a coach is afraid to be here because he feels compelled to win, then I don't believe he is the best man for the job anyway.

If anything this proves that just because someone has had a good run at another school/conference does not mean they will have the same success at your school.
