From what i was told, Spurrier wanted the LSU head coaching position and LSU completely ignored him (not sure the year)n and he enjoyed reminding LSU of this. Anyone else hear this?
Been rehashed a million times.

At the time, Spurrier was a gimmicky coach from the margins (Duke, the USFL etc), and Archer was the defensive coordinator under Arnsparger, who was considered the best defensive-minded coach we ever had. Similar to Muschamp under Saban, or possibly Smart at Bama now.
fwiw, Archer did go 10-1-1 his first season; he just couldn't run a program.

I sat through the same game and my opinion of spurrier was set during that era... anyone running up the score on him makes me a happy man....

I did too and have had a disdain for Spurrier ever since. It was the late touchdown and grimacing smile that did it for me. We had thrown in the towel.

I listened to the first half driving from Little Rock. Got home in time for the second half and hoped Florida scored 60 to get rid of Hallman. Those were horrible fall Saturdays in those days. People that didn't live it wouldn't believe it.

Good for you. I was there but left early. My brother, whom you've met (KingJoey), stayed until the final second ticked off the clock.

I want us to win and look impressive, but I have no angst about Spurrier. I respect him as a legend of the game and have long ago forgiven that horrible night (which was mostly our own fault anyway). I will always respect him and always have, and although there were times when I didn't particularly like him, I actually like him now. I have no want to embarrass him today.

Yes, before there was Spurrier, there was Emmitt Smith.

I was in TS in 87 when we beat Emmitt's Gators. They weren't anything like Spurrier's teams

Danny Weurful (sp) to Ike Hilliard was who I think wore our arse out that day.

Actually, Wuerffel was one of their backups in that game. He only came in after the issue was decided. Spurrier knew he had potential and wanted to give him a chance to show what he could do. Those deep downfield passes were for evaluation purposes. That served them well, to say the least, as he became the All-American and Heisman winner that Spurrier himself was. He probably didn't mind running it up on us for not hiring him, but he was focused on developing his own players. The fact that we got beaten by that much was our fault, not his.

That '93 UF game was and is right there with '91 A&M and '08 Florida.

Still, Spurrier has not beaten us since 2001. I've forgotten him as THAT coach (that is now Nick Saban to most LSU fans...was Tommy Tubberville and also Urban Meyer).

Refresh my memory - when Arnsparger became Florida's AD, who did he hire as football coach? The name is at the tip of my tongue......

I remember when it seemed like every SEC offensive player of the week had just played against the Tigers in Baton Rouge.

That week it was Shane Matthews (?).
