Right now, ANYONE can recruit at LSU. Anyone!

Wong, VERY wong. Recruiting is mostly about charisma, some guys got it and some guys don't. In my opinion it is CHARISMA that is the main common thing shared by all top coaches in CFB.

You read a lot of crap about coaches strategic abilities or his gameday coaching ability or about his motivational abilities but its all way overrated in CFB.

Whats the oldest quote on coaching there is? "It ain't about the X's and O's, its about the Jims and the Joes"! Its the players that make the plays that win or lose the games. You can coach your butt off and get em in exactly the right spots at exactly the right times, but to paraphrase "that WR from Moo State ain't NEVER gonna catch that ball over Patrick Peterson even if God his self is his position coach"!

Think Nick Saban turned Alabama around by waving his magic coach wand and is out "scheming" all the other coaches? Tell you what you do, go back and pull up the NFL drafts from the last few years and then watch them for the next few years. Count up how many drafted players Bama averaged before Saban and after Saban. It won't even be close. Little Nicky has charisma and can recruit his arse off if he is at a place that can be recruited to. He can't "coach up" players that don't have natural ability. See his Michigan St. years if you disagree.

Mediocre talent makes mediocre teams no matter WHO is coaching them. Ultra talented teams make winning teams no matter WHO is coaching them!

Think Saban runs some kind of blitz package that no other coach can copy? Think he can "scheme" his defense in a way no one can copy? Of course not, coaching is the biggest copycat business around and they all steal each others stuff if it works. Saban's aggressiveness isn't new to anyone, but if you ain't got the Joe's to run it you are stuck with something less risky.

Sabans genius is his ability to recruit. Pete Carroll's genius was his ability to recruit. Mack Brown's genius is his ability to recruit.

Repeat this mantra until you get it!

I say keep Miles at all costs. He has that "IT" factor that you need to be a great recruiter and keep the studs rolling in. If LSU keeps its current level of talent on campus in the coming years, Even I could coach em to 10 wins a year with a drunk monkey for my offensive coordinator! (sorta the same combination we seem to have at times)!

I'm very much in this boat. I'd say 90% of any program's success is recruiting.

I supported him on Oct. 3 and I support him today. Thanks Dan for starting this thread.

I'm glad he's our coach and I love Coach Miles.

ESPECIALLY when you consider This.

I don't get how seemingly hard it is for people to connect those dots. If you just rank the teams according to how many players they AVERAGE being drafted into the NFL over the course of 5 years...and then compare those rankings to how those teams actually finished in the polls and its going to be pretty darn close every time!

It will be the same cast of characters over and over. People can huff and puff all they want about Boise St. or TCU or whomever, but if they ain't AVERAGING 5 or 6 guys a year being drafted, then they will lose 9 out of 10 games to the schools who DO average that many. This is so common sense I just can't fathom how people get so sidetracked.

Two things I've always thought about Les Miles:

1. He is never afraid to play to win.

2. If you were going someplace and knew you were gonna get in a fight, you'd want Les to be the guy who had your back!

+1 on this one, this is truly what sets him apart from the cookie cutter coaching of today. Nobody wants to risk their high paying gigs by taking chances. They just play it by the book and if they lose they just say the players just have to play better.

Miles doesn't take the easy way out, he puts his team above his own career. Gotta admire that in a man.

First of all, don't talk to me like I am some kid that doesnt understand recruiting.

2nd of all, people want to play for Nick Saban because he breeds winning. Not because of some made up charisma. I've had about 5 friends play for Saban, and another 3-4 recruited by him. You don't know what charisma is if you think that is NIck Saban's main weapon when he walks into a recruits house.

Out of all the jibberish you just posted, you actually are just proving my point.

Some universities just sell itself. Michigan State didnt. LSU does. Alabama does. Florida does.

frick, Ron Zook recruited well at Florida.

Dont give me this charisma bullshite.

Nick Saban has brought 2 programs from the dead in the last decade not because he has charisma. It's because he is no nonsense guy, he runs a tight ship, and he has an attention to detail that most coaches lack. And yea, his NFL defensive back round doesnt hurt either.

Now ask yourself, if Les Miles was in those same shoes, how he would he have done? I guarantee you his charisma would have gotten him nowhere, and his coaching prowess would have gotten him fired, because he is a bumbling idiot.

Any top tier coach would be able to recruit at LSU the way it is set up now. ANd many will take this as a flame, but it is because of the groundwork Saban laid. Not the roody poo shite Miles is attempting to frick up.

you must have been in a coma the last 2 years. And tell people like Larry Coker that, who managed to go 7-6 his last year in Miami when they had like 5 straight years of double digit win seasons.

Exactly. They are satisfied with playing not to lose, which is NOT the same thing as playing to win.

I take it you mean "he isnt afraid to run some stupid play at the end of the game, when the game is on the line, because we were afraid to open it up earlier in the game and put up points"?

I respect your opinion, but I disagree.

You would have said this same thing about Miami. The last 4 years:

19th, 5th, 15th, 16th

One great class in 4 years.

That's not world class recruiting, and they have WAY more to offer in terms of night life, environment (beaches) and shite than LSU does.

Randy Shannon might be able to coach his way out of a phone booth, but Jimbo Fisher will dominate Miami with the way he is recruiting.

But I think there's a fine art to recruiting, as well. It's not just going out and getting 11 5 stars and calling it a day. You need a blend of role players and studs. You need to know what guys fit your scheme, your school, your culture, etc.

Exactly. Lest we forget, another reason to be proud of Les is the fact that Ryan Perilloux is no longer on this team, a decision we should all still support.

I grew up watching Stovall, Archer, Curly, Bill, and Dinardo. That being said, I do enjoy the success the Tigers have had under Les. He is a likable guy. However, it would be nice to blowout the teams we should every now and then. We played 1/2 of a team in week 1 (13 guys didn't make the trip) and squeaked out a win. Tennessee went to OT with UAB on their home field..we should have destroyed them. Florida had an injured QB and their 2 best players didn't play. I guess we will all see what we really have this season when we play Auburn.

Larry Coker effect. The same thing I see possibly looming with Les Miles if this season doesnt turn out well.

They aren't winning. When they win, they can recruit with anyone. And you win because of good coaching, not because of fricking charisma.

And in LA, for instance, you can get just about whoever you want right now. Another 4-5 loss season, you will see those "locks" start to look elsewhere. The same way they have at Miami. The same way they have at FSU. The last few years.

LSU has a good recruiting base set up right now. But the root of it stems from winning. Saban set the foundation. He won. He improved the facilities. He had new ones built. He re-instilled a winning attitude. Les has carried that over for a few years, but you can start to see the allure wearing off. This season is huge in that sense. You cant lose 4, then 5 games in back to back season. If that happens 3 years in a row, it could get messy.

again i will always say it.. saban's recruiting was good at LSU.. but is vastly over-rated. the high school football talent in the state of louisiana in the late 90's-early 00's is about as good as it gets.. and most those players were coming to LSU regardless.. it is still the big dog school in the state with no in state competition.

i think the out of state recruiting miles has done has been quite impressive. especially in states like texas and florida.

i really like miles. he has tremendous character and class. he is just so nutty at times it almost turns into a love and hate type of relationship.. but i wouldn't trade him for most of the other top tier coaches.

Yeah, you may be right.

I really do like Les, and I think he's a much better coach than given credit for.

I was a Les Miles fan long before I ever knew he'd be the coach at LSU. I lived in Oklahoma and watched him beat vastly superior OU teams with OSU scrub rosters twice. Something Gundy (who may say is "way better" than Les, STILL hasn't done, in the same time period.)

People in Oklahoma mocked him then for being goofy, but seemed to unanimously agree he was a good coach.

I still think attrition had a lot to do with the past 2 years of let downs (though last year we were really an "almost there" team, playing so many close ones).

This year could certainly end poorly (losses to Auburn, Bama, AND Arkansas would probably put Les in very hot water). But I see improvement on both sides of the ball, and I highly doubt we lose three of those games. Every other game on our schedule should be a win. If we lose one of those, then Miles tenure will be over faster than you or I could blink.
