Saying Lee is excited about starting is not the the same as saying he has a "frick all" attitude. He could feel very bad for JJ and still be excited about the opportunity.

In some context yes. If Lee were getting the start because JJ was laid up in a hospital room then I could see his focus being on JJ rather than his promotion.
In the context of how this played out I think the opposite is true.

I don't care if I knew a good friend committed a crime. If they were arrested, pretty much all my concern would be with them at that time.
