answer this one first... which one is thrown more often?
Posted on 3/16/15 at 4:58 pm to tigerskin
Oh geez. This should be good...
Posted on 3/16/15 at 4:59 pm to tigerskin
Neither. You just swing and hope for the best.

always look fastball and adjust to off speed. but if you have a pitcher with a killer off speed you can certainly try and guess early in the count
if you have a pitcher that can't blow it by you even at their fastest pitch, then you can look off speed.
Greg Maddux couldn't hit 90, and people knew his off speed was coming, but still couldn't hit him.

Ted Williams said never anticipate a pitch, react according to recognition, and if you are totally fooled, lay off it unless it's strike three, however, it's pretty hard not to get into the situation and, maybe knowing something of the pitcher, anticipate a certain pitch

As my son's hitting instructor says.... "How do you hit the curveball?

.
Hit the fastball."

Like Mr Miyagi said, "Close eye, always close eye!"

totally depends on the situation
Anyone that answers this without at least asking what the count is should be discredited.
Pitcher tendencies also important, but the count is most important (unless it's a thumber that throws a bunch of change ups/slow curves...even behind in the count).

Not true. When he came up with the Cubs he was in the low 90s consistently.

Sitting off speed, and "if he brings the deuce I'm taking him down town".

This. Most of the pitches you're going to see are fastballs and it's the easiest pitch to square up, if you look off speed A. It's still a crapshoot between slider, curve, change, etc. and B. If a hitter's looking for a pitch that's 80 mph, they don't have much of a shot when it comes out at 92 mph

Yes sir. Start everything but your hands
Posted on 3/16/15 at 5:12 pm to tigerskin
Depends on the count for me.

Greg Maddox also got 6" on both sides of the plate. They became more strict on the strike zone because of him and Glavine.

I love to see a really good batter "force" a pitcher to throw him either what he wants or get the pitcher make a mistake on his go to pitch, good example was the year we won the NC when Bret Barbier was batting at a pretty crucial time in the game, don't recall how many pitches, but he just kept fouling them off until he got what he wanted and it must have looked like a basketball coming at him by then

any pitcher known for having that type of control gets that, sometimes to the extreme, especially if the catcher sets a target and never moves his mitt until the the ball hits it
