The way I see things is that if the MLB drafts a player, but they don't like the $$ offer they can not sign and return to college...I'm operating on the assumption this is accurate, if not please let me know.

Beyond that, what happens if the player doesn't end up liking the $ they're presented and can't negotiate something they're happy with? As re they still able to transfer to a different school or are they stuck where they last played?

Sorry I'm sure most people know the answer but I'm at a loss

I understand what you’re saying but the supplemental picks and such are to help smaller market teams which I’m for. The bigger market teams have enough advantage as is.

Every pick in the first 10 rounds has a slot value attached to it. Teams can offer more/less than that value. They typically will offer more to a high schooler/draft eligible sophomore to entice them to skip out on college. They will offer less to seniors that have no leverage. The important thing to remember is if they do draft a player and that player does not sign, they will lose that available money(slot value) and cannot reallocate it to another draft pick. So basically if a player is drafted in the first 10 rounds, they are more than likely going to sign. If they choose not to sign, unless they’re in the transfer portal already(Cameron Flukey for example) then they have to go back to their school since the portal is closed.

The MLB draft is far and above the most complicated of any of the pro drafts.

This. Teams can negotiate before the draft. In the last three drafts, only seven players drafted in the Top 10 rounds did not sign. It’s less than 1%.

Yep, not totally unheard of considering UCLA had a pitcher drafted in I think the second round last year and made it to campus. But it’s almost a given they’re gone. Hell River Hamilton was drafted in the 11th last year and got 5th round money

Thanks! This is what I was curious about, makes sense...

Also didn't realize that there was the aspect of losing out on the money they offer for that player that's an interesting and confusing wrinkle

If you’re drafted, top 4 or so rounds the money is already agreed before they are drafted. In the old days you negotiated but now there’s slot value. If a senior gets drafted top 10 rounds, its to over pay someone else. All the supplemental picks are for various reasons…. Not signing, trades ect.

Actually I think they call before the pick is made and if the player verbally agrees to the value the pick is made. If he doesn’t he isn’t picked.
