Per Matt Thomas. He also is reporting he is not happy with the timing of the firing

If it's not coach O, I'm not worried.

Brady Hoke has a little bit of experience. These things usually go in one of two ways. The team either just completely lays down for the rest of the year, or they're energized by the firing and play really well.

Speaking in general... not about Butch OR Orgeron (or Fat Bert/Jeff Long) specifically....

I think mid-season firings are the way to go in today's CFB. There's so much double-speak and hands in the pie if you wait till end of season other coaches who might have interest are wait and see.

Then you don't get the new guy until Jan, and only have a couple weeks between hiring and new staff till signing day. I'd say in the SEC and ACC, if you have one blown recruiting class you're screwed.

Then there's the entire year where your recruiting is pretty much ineffective because it's based on relationships with primarily position coaches and as a recruit you can see the writing on the wall and have no idea who you'll be playing for, and there's too many other options.

And if you're Arky or Tenn, why hang on. You only increase the negativity as the year drags on affecting everything, including recruits. Might as well excise SOME of it. If you're going to have all these "unknowns" surrounding your program, might as well eliminate that as one of them and at least start moving forward.

Modern day recruiting is a 2 yr process. NCAA rules don't reflect that. Neither does the "change in the offseason" AD mentality.
