I am a life long LSU fan. I understand the basic difference between a 4-3 and 3-4 defense to be the number of lineman and linebackers and their positioning. Please explain to me like I'm a 2nd grader how the change in linemen and linebackers has our DBs and safeties following wide receivers into the end zone and then turning and pointing fingers at each other? I am genuinely and sincerely looking for honest answers from rant experts. TIA.

Nothing. Guys don't know their assignments. That's a general football thing, not a scheme thing. I also think we BADLY need safeties and these guys just don't trust the help will be there.

In the 3-4, I don't remember the linebackers playing so much man. Defense is primarily press man and isn't changing. I think coordinators are scheming against that. Point in case the, the first Arkansas touchdown. It's a rub route against press man, and it worked. Jay Ward, press man with no safety help over top against one of their fastest receivers. It's a recipe for disaster.

There are plenty of reasons for the bad defense and coaches and players are to blame but this fact here is where the inexperience factor comes into play. It is easier for an inexperienced group to play man to man as the assignments are easier. When you go zone that is when communication comes into play and when you have a bunch of guys who haven’t played much actual games and with each other you get major busts.

I don't think it's a suitable excuse, but this is correct. They're not able to.

LSU is really not running a 4-3. They're running a 4-2-5. It's extremely basic which is why they struggle being able to adjust to motion because they are not allowed to check in and out of anything.

There's no one real reason for why they're this bad. Effort has been a problem, as has the scheme, and just basic talent deficiencies.

I remember after the Mizzou game when they talked about completely simplifying everything. This is the consequence of that.

I have always been a firm believer in man coverage but offenses are designed to abuse man coverage now with rub routes and slot receivers working against safeties/lbs. The defenses that appear to have the most success now are teams playing zone with defenders reading qbs eyes.

The thinking is we have elite dbs and are able to play man and rush the qb...I haven't seen that whether it's coaching, talent, or ability to grasp coverage concepts IDK.

Inexperience is not an excuse it is a fact and one part of many parts as to why the defense is bad this year.

In the 3-4 the linebackers have assignments. In the 4-3 the MLBs are in conflict with having to react to run or pass and cover both... It takes a different type of player to play 4-3 LB
