Was watching the Stanford/USC game last night and on the long 'flea-flicker' pass from the wildcat formation, it looked to me like the first handoff was to the back passing in front of the wildcat. he then tosses to Luck who completes a long pass downfield.

I thought that would be illegal.

Did anyone else see this? Am I remembering it incorrectly?

Didn't see it, but it would seem legal as long as the handoff was behind the scrimmage and the pass to luck was a backwards pass

That is all true - but I thought if you handed the ball forward that counted as a 'forward pass' - Either the rule has changed or I am just wrong about it in the first place.

eta - the ball was taken while the back was running horizontally - so maybe the ball was not advanced during the handoff?

the running back can advance the ball as long as he doesnt cross the line of scrimmage

OK - just curious what the rule was.

thanx

I was harking back to high school where our coach said the running back must pass BEHIND the qb or else it would be illegal to throw it forward after the handoff.

Think about it, if that was the rule- anytime someone fumbled on a handoff in front of them (pretty much every handoff out of the Shotgun or Wildcat), it would be an incomplete pass instead of a fumble.
