Yesterday, hung-out with a friend's dad who played Safety and backup QB for Miami (before it was "the U"). He got excited when I told him I was from Baton Rouge. The sound of those words immediately brought him back to Saturday night 1962.

"LSU beat everyone back then, they just brought us in to whoop us....they put a live Tiger right behind our bench, everyone was scared to be near it, we all stood on the other side...they would prod it to make it roar....those cajuns down there are crazy...". The quotes just kept coming: "it was the loudest stadium I've ever seen...the most intimidating place I ever played...Saturday night in tiger stadium (pauses to reflect and smile)...will never forget it".

LSU 17 - Miami 3. While researching, found a great site for football info. Like all great sites (TD.com, Wiki) users generate the content. LINK

I don't know man, if you're sitting at the QB meetings, game planning as QB and throwing all week at practice I think it's safe to call you a QB.

He was QB in HS, safety was just a way to get some playing time. ...I forget how negative this place can be. He claims to be a QB, that's what I call him.

Nobody's ever seen it and you won't either 'cause it ain't never happened and ain't gonna either!

The only place Mike has ever been in Tiger Stadium is driven around the stadium before the game and then parked outside the visitors field entrance.
He is and has always been removed from the field before the game starts.

I'm only 37 but even I've seen Mike the tiger lingering on the field (near end zone tunnel) during games. The cage is so thick I don't see why it's so intimating.

Years can affect a man's memory but I'm positive you don't make something like this up. Plus, I've heard about it before!

At the least, the cage was behind their bench for a minute or something.

Like I said, the cage is taken around the field before the game on it's way out of the stadium, AFTER the visiting team has come on the field so yeah, technically, it has been behind the visitors bench.

But that ain't what the guy said.

Most likely, I was going to games before you were a gleam in your mommy's eye.

It's a well know fact that many players and coaches from opposing teams have been intimidated on coming out of their locker room by Mike's presence.

Ive got you by a few but Ive never seen Mike on the field during the game. I cant swear about the tunnel but I dont really remember either way. Maybe your guy is talking about during warm ups, they get Mike to roar. We still do that today (I think). They put the mic near the cage and get him to roar over the loud speaker.

Now we boo our own players and leave at half time.

Sad really...

Quite so.

I'm beginning to feel as if an opponent can survive the first quarter, TS is now a neutral field for the rest of the game, especially after half-time. ;)

Yeah, we still have a great atmosphere for big games that stay close, but overall, we're living off of reputation these days. We went and got spoiled earlier this decade.

The Arkansas game was pretty close last year (OT), and I was embarrased to be an LSU fan. Probabably 1/3rd full at the start of the 4th quater and that's being generous.
