Agree with most of your comments/theory except the Italy “course”. Italy has the oldest population of any country in Europe or Asia(25% over 65 years of age). Italy also has what is considered by the WHO as one of the worst healthcare systems of any developed country on the planet. Those two things are skewing the mortality rates, so far, to abnormal levels comparatively speaking

Finally, some rational thought on the subject. Even in the worst case estimate, the mortality rate for covid-19 is 3%, and most of that is the very old (80+) or the very frail. That means the survival rate for covid-19 is at least 97%. The media doesn’t present it this way because it is a lot less scary.

We don't know whether this merely is "glorified flu". Our only option at this point is containment. Reasonable people can disagree about postponing or suspending events so far into the future, but maybe the HNOC's feel its necessary for planning purposes.
