I've heard a lot of people talk about how our expectations are too high and unrealistic and we have become a spoiled fanbase. Well, then what are realistic expectations for LSU football? I think it is reasonable to expect:

.500 or above vs UF, UTenn, UGA, AU, and Bama.

.800 or above vs UK, Ole Miss, Arkansas, SCar

It is below expectations for us to ever lose to MSU or Vandy.

An LSU defense should rarely give up 30+ points in regulation. If our O can score 30 points we should be able to win the game. WAC/MWC-type scores don't belong on our scoreboard.

That our athletes compete with good sportmanship and are good citizens as well. Let the criminals go to the U or somewhere else. I expect our coaches to run a clean program.

We should be a contender for our division every season and win it about 1/3 of the time.

SEC Crown every 5-6 years

Am I way off base here? or are these realistic expectations?

Discuss..

Doberman, totally agree with your entire post but this part really hit home. I've seen more taunting and jaw-jacking this year than I care to - all while getting our arses kicked! Sure, it may have been going on all along for the past several years but at least it wasn't as blatant on network TV.

Quinn Johnson's TDs vs Troy were a perfect example of how to act. Score the touchdown, walk over to the ref, hand him the ball and jog off the field with your teammates - with class.

Which athletes are on the team now that you consider a criminal, and not good citizens?

Agreed for the most part, but I don't think you can really set an absolute win % for elite teams, and I don't think 40% against them is really terribly underperforming. I'd like to see that, but I think it's slightly (and I emphasize slightly) unrealistic.

As long as Houston Nutt is at Ole Miss, then I don't think that's realistic. Move Ole Miss into the .500 group if they keep up the work they've started this year. Besides that, I think .700 is more realistic, so I disagree here.

Barring extremely freakish outstanding circumstances, agree.

Agreed.

AGREED. I think they've done a decent job weeding out the bad so far -- might've handled Perriloux a bit better, perhaps, but besides that they've done well.

Agreed, except SEC crown should be a bit more frequent, in my opinion.

That said, during Miles' tenure:

.500 vs Florida in four games (2/4)
.666 vs Tennessee in three games (2/3)
.000 vs Georgia (!!!) in two games (0/2)
.750 vs Auburn in four games (3/4)
.750 vs Alabama in four games (3/4)

average: 8/17 (.471 -- slightly below your expectations, well above mine)

.500 vs Kentucky in two games (1/2)
.750 vs Ole Miss in four games (3/4)
.666 vs Arkansas in three games (2/3)
1.00 vs South Carolina in two games (2/2)

average: 8/11 (.723 -- fairly below your expectations, slightly above mine)

*note: Arkansas win puts them at .750, which is dead between our expectations

undefeated vs Mississippi State and Vanderbilt = hitting expectations

LSU defenses have given up 30+ points in regulation 7 times since Miles came to LSU.Average %: 13.7% (7/51). Depending on your definition of "rare," that accomplishment has been reached; the average is twice per season, and in a 13-14 game season that's not bad when you face the likes of Florida every year; all it takes is Florida + fluke game to get 30+ points (or, like this year, Florida + Georgia).

LSU has won the SEC West twice in four attempts under Miles's watch -- .500, more than 1/3.

LSU has won the SEC once in four attempts under Miles -- .250, and more than every 5-6 years.

So there you have it.

It's been happening far too much over the last few seasons. It hasn't been mentioned much because of the team's success.
People tend to overlook discipline problems like that when things are going well.

None, that is just an expectation that I believe most of us have of the program. I think Miles and Saban did well in this area. Dinardo...a different story.

Dinardo recruited going up the hill in the program/ Saban recruited better because of DiNardo talent he left on the team. Miles recruited about what Saban would have done until he got to Bama. Thus, Miles appears to fighting an uphill battle after a year like this one! But, I would truly hope that Miles can recover by get his coaching staff and players back on track, so we the fans can enjoy our States Flagship success' of late?
