I was watching several games Saturday and was just getting board seeing the same shite in every game. Every one is doing the same stuff. Its refreshing nowdays too see Navy, AF, and GT run that triple option, or fournette or Guice cut a toss up for a brusing 8 yards behind a punishing fullback block. I'm not saying keep things the same. Our offense must be improved and made more efficient, but I am glad we aren't some soft spread team with zone running schemes with Olinemen that don't put their hands in the dirt. Just wanted to share.

I'll take whatever can get us better than 0 points and 125 yards against Alabama.

Because of the talent gap, it will take a few years to stop the spread offense. NFL coaching with more even talent, two years max. it would be effective. But before much longer college defensive coordinators will begin to stop it, it'll take longer since top-to-bottom talent of college ball is more uneven.

It is less about system, and more about being balanced and how well you execute the system. Just look at Texas Tech and Ole Miss as examples of teams who can score with almost anyone, but who can't run the ball, can't control the clock, and wear their defenses down. Look at Auburn as a team that can't throw the ball enough to win if the run doesn't work. Look at Navy, AF, Army, and GA Tech as what they are- gimmick teams that win (and in Tech's case, lose) because of who they play.

On the other hand, look at FSU and Pitt. They both run more of a pro-style as a base, but they do a lot out of it. They can throw and run, and they know how to execute. I know FSU isn't as good this year, but that, as it usually is when they struggle, has more to do with their defense.

Arkansas actually does many of the same things, and had a great offense last year. Their O Line and injuries have held them back this season, but they still had a better showing against Bama than we could manage.

So, I agree that we don't HAVE to blindly follow the crowd and go to a spread. In fact, it would likely lead to a lot of struggles due to personnel issues the first couple of years. However, we don't need to run the option or 3 yards and a cloud of dust, either. The bottom line is that the team needs to be more balanced than it is right now, no matter what system they run, or they will still end the season with some disappointing losses next year.

I actually feel like there is a little bit of a reversal to pro style by a decent chunk of the top 25 (AP) teams.

1. Alabama - normally pro style, but more spread this season
4. Michigan - pro style - utilize a good chunk of I and ace formations
6. Wisconsin - pro style - very old school
7. Washington - pro style
15. USC - pro style
16. LSU - pro style
17. Florida St - pro style
21. Florida - use both spread and pro style formations/plays

that will take time....our offensive line is a patchwork of mostly guards and a center playing out of his natural position....

The game has always evolved. There was a time when there no forward passing. The spread is here to stay. It is apart of the evolution in the chess match of football. I don't want to be the old dude pissed off because coordinators have decided to stop banging their heads against a brick wall. Intelligence dictates that you grow toward making defenses defend the entire width of the field, not just the length of the field.

LSU's offense is woefully painful to watch.

That would take a gameplan that's actually worth more than the paper it's printed on. LSU hasn't had that in a long time.

Go watch high school football. It is so boring to watch because almost every team is running the spread. I have seen pee wee football running the spread. Not saying it doesn't work but it is just boring to watch especially a team that just doesn't have the right type of athlete to run it.

Touchdowns, whatever produces touchdowns. LSU had very few of them from November 2015 through September of 2016.

To me there is nothing better than 6 yards a carry over and over again. seeing the defense just fricking dead. Impose your will.

Obviously we can't beat Bama or some of the other big boys like this, but it's sure fun to watch.

while there has been a lot of evolution that doesn't mean the spread is here to stay anymore than the triple option. at one time the triple option was the best offense and defenses couldn't stop it.

and, the "spread" isn't always the same offense. hell, the run and gun was the spread and that was 30 or 40 years ago. spreading out the defense so they have to cover the entire field has been around a long time. the problem with the "pure spread" is it doesn't allow controlling the clock and it keeps one's D on the field too long.

Where did I ever say that? I said an effective running game is entertaining. Obviously if you have a shitty passing game you can't have an effective running game long term.

OP has a point. Actually with everyone being spread, Defensive teams will be built more to stop that. Maybe the few with the fullbacks and hands in the dirt will start becoming harder to defend over time. Just based on personel.

What???? This is not a "big chunk". Article last week pointed out that 12 of the top 15 ran spread. Where's the reversal? The teams you point team have always been spread.

Really? The spread is boring. So lining up in the I-Formation, and running the ball 80% is exciting???

1. The triple option is still here.
2. There is a run version on the spread (Bama) - and pass version (Texas Tech)
3. Bama doesn't have a problem with clock management.
4. Spread has evolved from the run and shoot.
5. Nick Saban - coaching since 1970 running pro style. He has evolved. Who are we not to? On second thoughts, let's just keep doing what we've been doing. Let's See how that will work out.
