You can be signed into both ESPN+ and your cable subscriber at the same time. I know this for 10000% fact, because I am. I'd bet the same $10,000 that he is signed into both, and he just thinks he's watching on ESPN+.

I saw the game by going to ESPN web page and then clicking on Watch and then Schedule and Replays. This gives you a list of sports and games available and says which channel the game is on. I clicked on the SEC+ for the LSU spring game and it then asked for my cable provider. I selected YouTubeTV and bingo I was in. ESPN+ is different from SEC+ and sometimes games are carried there but not on SEC+. Those games you would have to pay for the separate membership.
